Nicole Dextras, Artist and Julia Pine, Curator on Styling Sustainability: Nature, Art, and Dress
Saturday, June 23
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Part of Art Encounters
A bundle of laurel leaves found by Nicole Dextras in an alleyway of her Vancouver house led the artist to create an entire collection of garment-like structures made from leaves, flowers, and fruit. In addition to being beautiful works of art, this series of natural creations—wittily entitled Weedrobes—suggests a new approach to the fashion industry: one based on eco-friendly materials and ethical manufacturing practices. Centred upon the exhibition Fashionality: Dress and Identity in Contemporary Canadian Art, this encounter will explore the nuances and relationships between nature, art, and dress. In addition to a presentation by Dextras, Canada's pre-eminent artist working with eco-friendly fashion, the exhibition curator, Julia Pine, will give a “nature walk” through the galleries, focusing on works that incorporate natural materials and imagery.
