CAREERS AT MCMICHAEL

This position is dependent on receiving funding through Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations (YCWH). All applicants must be in full time studies pre and post employment term and meet all other criteria of the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations student grant.

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is one of Canada’s largest art galleries, with a permanent collection of over 6,500 works and an active exhibition program. The objectives of the McMichael include:

  • to preserve and exhibit the permanent collection
  • to provide documentation for the collection and
  • to conduct activities to enhance and complement the collection

The main objective of the Preparator/Installation Intern will be to develop skills and training in standard museum practices and techniques for the areas of art handling, exhibition preparation and installation. Working under the supervision of the McMichael’s professional art technicians, the Intern will assist with the installation of temporary exhibitions, and the preparation of artworks for display, travel, and storage. In addition, the Intern will learn basic collection management practices.

The successful candidate will have a passion for art in all media, and an interest in and knowledge of art handling, collection care, methodologies for exhibition and display. Other requirements include good communication and listening skills, a high level of attention to detail and accuracy, manual dexterity and the ability to work in a team environment, with flexibility and the ability to switch between assigned tasks. Familiarity with collection management databases and training or experience in the safe operation of power tools and equipment are assets. The successful candidate will be required to provide a police check upon obtaining the position. Prior experience in art handling and installation in a professional, public museum or gallery is an asset.
