This House Was Made For Christmas!

Dec 2 - Dec 16

Join us on Sunday December 2, 9, and 16 as we celebrate the holidays.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the gallery’s founders, Robert and Signe McMichael, celebrated Christmas with a welcoming spirit, inviting neighbours into their home to enjoy their collection of Canadian art. With its hand-hewn log, stone architecture construction and panoramic views of the snow-covered forest, the McMichaels’ home was truly a place of special Christmas cheer; so-much-so that Signe McMichael was once quoted in an article, “This house was made for Christmas”.

Now you too can experience the warmth and joy of Christmas the McMichael way!

Yuletide highlights will include:

  • A display of winter-themed artwork and Christmas cards
  • 1950s-inspired decorations in the original living room (now the Founders’ Lounge)
  • Wagon rides (11:00 am to 2:00 pm, first come, first served basis)
  • Scheduled picture time with Santa*
  • Instructor-led art activities
  • Every Sunday, the DuffleBag Theatre Company will present two Christmas-themed performances at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm, including:

Sunday December 2nd

A Christmas Carol

11:30 am & 2 pm

Penny-pinching miser Ebenezer Scrooge is well-known across Victorian London for being far more interested in making money than friends. Above all else, he hates Christmas time and its spirit of giving. But on one particular Christmas Eve, several spirits give Ebenezer the surprise of his life, as they whisk him off on a magical journey through past, present and future, to show him the true meaning of the season. From Fezziwig to Tiny Tim, all the favorites are included in DuffleBag Theatre’s exuberant version of the Charles Dickens Yuletide classic!

Sunday December 9th

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

11:30 am & 2 pm

Everyone can’t wait for Santa’s arrival on Christmas Eve, even with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads! But somewhere along the line, the jolly old elf seems to have mislaid his sack of presents. What’s worse is that Old Man Winter is determined to stop him. Will Christmas have to be cancelled? Not if Mrs. Claus and the reindeer can help! DuffleBag expands the beloved Clement Clarke Moore poem in fun new directions just in time for the holidays!
