Art Preparator / Installation Intern
16 weeks: May 8 – August 25, 2023
Canadian Museum Association Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations grant
The main objective of the Preparator/Installation Intern will be to develop skills and training in standard museum practices and techniques for the areas of art handling, exhibition preparation and installation. The Intern will assist with the installation of temporary exhibitions, and the preparation of artworks for display, travel, and storage. In addition, the Intern will learn basic collection management practices.
The successful candidate has completed studies in Fine art, Woodworking, Collections Management or Applied Museum Studies and have a passion for art in all media, and an interest in and knowledge of art handling, collection care, methodologies for exhibition and display. Other requirements include good communication and listening skills, a high level of attention to detail and accuracy, manual dexterity, and the ability to work in a team environment, with flexibility and the ability to switch between assigned tasks. Familiarity with collection management databases and training or experience in the safe operation of power tools and equipment are assets. The successful candidate will be required to provide a police check upon obtaining the position.
Prior experience in art handling and installation in a professional, public museum or gallery is an asset.
Marketing & Communication Support
7 weeks: June 12 – July 28, 2023
Ontario Summer Experience Program (SEP) Grant
The Marketing and Communications Support would be responsible for researching marketing and promotional opportunities for exhibitions and programs, organizing files/records and photographs approved for marketing use, compiling visitor and programs data and generating reports, updating online advertising results including Google AdWords campaigns, tracking the redemption of coupons and passes and managing reciprocal relationships with various organizations (local art galleries, libraries, community centers etc.). The candidate will also support the department by assisting in the design and printing of promotional materials, and other administrative and marketing-related tasks, as required.
Grounds Keepers / Facilities Support (2 positions)
2 positions at 7 weeks: May-June and July-August
1 position at 16 weeks: May 8 – August 25, 2023 (this is a non-grant position and candidates do not need to meet the grant criteria)
Ontario Summer Experience Program (SEP) Grant
The Ground Keepers / Facilities Support are responsible for general grounds maintenance, grass cutting, flower/shrub bed maintenance, grounds clean-up, ensuring trails are clear and destination grounds are free of tree debris. Position will include movement of equipment and supplies throughout the building, including set-up and tear-down of function equipment and furniture. Cleaning throughout all areas is required and the Groundskeepers/Facilities Support students would work with the Facilities department in helping to ensure routine cleanliness and COVID protocols.
Experience working with lawn tools and machinery, and/or working in lawn care. Energetic, flexible with good customer service skills in a public institution. Position will require lifting items up to 20kg and bending to support maintenance duties. First Aid training an asset.
ArtVenture Camp Director
4 month term: May 8 – August 25, 2023

The main objectives of the ArtVenture Camp Director is to oversee the daily operations of ArtVenture Summer Camp, clearly communicating with staff, colleagues, parents and campers. Fluency in English is required. Administration and all camp activities will take place at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, unless COVID regulations dictate otherwise.
The successful candidate is a full-time student, completing a graduate degree in Education, Museum Studies, Visual Arts and/or Art History, and will demonstrate an Art background, a passion for working with children, excellent oral and written communication skills, superior organization skills, attention to detail and proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
Assistant Art Gallery Camp Administrator
13 weeks: June 5 – September 1, 2023
Canada Summer Jobs Grant
The Assistant Art Gallery Camp Administrator (previously Lead Camp Assistant) will assist with the administrative functions in the preparation and delivery of the children and youth Summer Art camp programs at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
Tasks include:
- Assist in arranging the pre-camp training
- Assist with the administration and delivery of the children and youth Art camp programs.
- Perform related administrative tasks involving data entry creation of class lists, staff handbooks, reports, evaluations of staff and programs.
- Assist with scheduling and booking of spaces as well as set up and take down of spaces.
- Help oversee day to day operation of the summer Art program.
Students enrolled in Education studies; Early Childhood Education; Special Education; Art background would benefit from this position. Students are exposed to an Art Museum environment and in contact with the education of art to students of all learning abilities. Excellent oral and written communication skills, superior organization skills, attention to detail and proficiency in MS Work and Excel is required. Passion and experience working and educating children and day camp experience preferred.
ArtVenture Camp Assistants (5 positions)
July 3 – September 1, 2023
Ontario Summer Experience Program (SEP) Grant
The Art Camp Assistants support the Camp Instructors with delivery of art programs through preparing materials, assisting in small groups, helping to ensure the students understand the activities, and providing additional support to campers with special needs. Art Camp Assistants receive two days of pre-camp training and additional regular training as they work alongside experienced, professional Art Studio Instructors in delivering the programs. Work will be on site at the McMIchael Canadian Art Collection, unless Public Health Guidelines dictate otherwise.
The successful candidates will be students wishing to pursue studies in Child education, Art Instruction and teaching. Experience working in summer camps or with children / youth in a teaching requirement is required.
ArtVenture Studio Instructors: minimum 4 week terms
(Camp Studio Instructors are non-grant positions and candidates need not fulfill granting criteria)
ArtVenture Camp Instructors will work minimum 4-week terms. The main objectives of the Summer ArtVenture Camp Instructor is to develop and deliver creative art studio, and outdoor nature activities for children enrolled in summer camp. Programs must strongly relate to themes outlined in the McMichael ArtVenture Children’s brochure and should include meaningful connections to the McMichael’s collection and grounds. Fluency in English is required. Administration and all camp activities will take place at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg.
Successful candidates will have completed a post graduate degree or the third or fourth year of a bachelor degree, and will demonstrate strong visual arts background and experience and a good working knowledge of Canadian Art, including Inuit and First Nations, a passion and experience working and educating children and experience in managing teams through leadership training, art camp involvement and other related skills. Experience leading art programs in person and/or virtually.
