Canadian Museum Association Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations Grant

The ArtVenture Camp Director oversees the daily operations of ArtVenture Summer Camp, clearly communicating with staff, colleagues, parents and campers. Administration and all camp activities will take place at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg.

The successful candidate is a full-time student, completing a graduate degree in Education, Museum Studies, Visual Arts and/or Art History, and will demonstrate an Art background, a passion for working with children, excellent oral and written communication skills, superior organization skills, attention to detail and proficiency in MS Word and Excel.

ArtVenture Camp Assistants (5 positions)

July 2 to August 29, 2025

Ontario Summer Experience Program (SEP) Grant

The Art Camp Assistants support the Camp Instructors with delivery of art programs through preparing materials, assisting in small groups, helping to ensure the students understand the activities, and providing additional support to campers with special needs. Art Camp Assistants receive two days of pre-camp training and additional regular training as they work alongside experienced, professional Art Studio Instructors in delivering the programs. Work will be on site at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

The successful candidates will be students wishing to pursue studies in Child education, Art Instruction and teaching. Experience working in summer camps or with children / youth in a teaching requirement is required.

ArtVenture Studio Instructors: minimum 4 week terms

(Camp Studio Instructors are non-grant positions and candidates need not fulfill granting criteria)

ArtVenture Camp Instructors will work minimum 4-week terms. The main objectives of the Summer ArtVenture Camp Instructor is to develop and deliver creative art studio, and outdoor nature activities for children enrolled in summer camp.  Programs must strongly relate to themes outlined in the McMichael ArtVenture Children’s brochure and should include meaningful connections to the McMichael’s collection and grounds. Fluency in English is required. Administration and all camp activities will take place at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg.

Successful candidates will have completed a post graduate degree or the third or fourth year of a bachelor degree, and will demonstrate strong visual arts background and experience and a good working knowledge of Canadian Art, including Inuit and First Nations, a passion and experience working and educating children and experience in managing teams through leadership training, art camp involvement and other related skills. Experience leading art programs in person and/or virtually.

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection ranks among Canada’s top public galleries in size and significance. The Gallery, exhibition, programming and event spaces are surrounded by a network of outdoor trails, outdoor sculpture garden and 100 acres of conservation land with breathtaking views of the Humber Valley. Over 6,500 works of art representing the Art of Canada comprise the permanent collection, and the gallery welcomes on average more than 115,000 visitors annually. As a public institution, the McMichael is committed to delivering exceptional visitor experience throughout our campus grounds and facilities.

We are currently recruiting existing part-time or new staff to fill the need of a Weekend Sales Representative who will support and report to the Senior Manager, Sales & Community Engagement to provide tours of rental space at the gallery and to positively promote McMichael’s event spaces. This position will also provide lead customer service support on weekends for the Art Bus initiative that will provide transportation to the McMichael from downtown Toronto from mid-June to mid-October.

Hours of work from June 24 -October 15 will be on Saturday and Sundays from 9:30 am-4:00 pm. From November to April, work will be on either Saturday or Sundays, based on the schedule of appointments.

Qualifications:

  • A talent for interacting with people and providing a welcoming environment
  • Superior verbal and customer service presentation skills
  • Knowledge about and passion for the McMichael Canadian Art Collection
  • Sales experience an asset
  • Knowledge of second language (particularly French) is an asset

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Greet guests for preset appointments within the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 on select weekends, from May through December.
  • Tour guests through different function sites (Grand Hall, Founder’s Lounge, Wedding Hill, Gallery 8, Education space) and answer questions.
  • Review wedding package with price, floor plans, vendor information, bonus membership, corporate information, sample contract.
  • Prepare and provide meeting summary reports/emails
  • Provide customer service and logistics support for Art Bus travellers starting at 9:30 am (bus departs Toronto at 10:30 am). Serve as a liaison for Art Bus riders, answering any questions and ensuring visitors catch the return bus departing the Gallery at 3:30 pm (June 24-October 15)
  • Check emails and take calls regarding any guest issues with pick up locations, in contact with bus company to troubleshoot any pick up problems

Rate of pay: $16-17.00 per hour
