The McMichael Canadian Art Collection provides ArtVenture Camp for children ages four to ten. Children learn the basics of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage and more. Our programs help to stimulate creativity and build art making skills, in an environment that is safe, fun and fulfilling. Art activities are complemented by gallery tours, stories, games, and exploring the natural beauty of our 40 hectares of conservation land.
We are currently recruiting Camp Instructors for our ArtVenture March Break Camp program.
Job Summary: Camp instructors will work with the ArtVenture March Break Camp (a 1-week long term). The main objectives of the ArtVenture Camp Instructor are to develop and deliver art studio, outdoor and in-gallery activities for children enrolled in the McMichael’s ArtVenture camps while ensuring a safe and creative environment for all campers. These creative programs must strongly relate to themes outlined in the McMichael ArtVenture brochure and should include meaningful connections to the McMichael’s collection, current exhibitions and grounds.
Instructor Responsibilities Include:
- Develop and deliver creative art studio, outdoor and in-gallery activities for children enrolled in ArtVenture camp, leading and overseeing the daily activities for assigned group.
- Come to work alert and ready to work with children.
- Submit all activity outlines, admin documents, and material lists in accordance with submission deadlines.
- Interpret and incorporate the gallery collections into art activities in an innovative and interesting manner. Including at least 3 meaningful visits to the gallery. Generate ideas and motivate campers through engaging art discussions and activities.
- Provide daily directions and supervision to camp Assistants and Volunteers, ensuring all daily needs and plans have been clearly and effectively communicated and ensuring adequate preparedness for each day.
- Act as a leader and role model, fostering a positive, creative and open learning environment.
- Ensure materials and supplies are used safely and cleaned properly by campers, assistants & volunteers.
- Direct assistants and volunteers in cleaning up studio space and putting materials back. Studios must always be left clean and tidy.
- Prioritize child well-being and safety throughout the camp.
- Evaluate situations for potential risks to the safety and well-being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
- Demonstrate the confidence and ability to make decisions in the best interests of the campers, modifying programs to meet individual camper needs.
- Resolve problems and conflicts among camp participants effectively as they arise.
- Reports all incidents promptly and thoroughly to the Art Program Manager and/or Camp Director.
- Meet with campers’ parents and/or caregivers to relay information to them about the camp, child’s participation and behaviour, and answer any questions they might have.
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills in preparation for and during Summer Camp.
Requirements:
Administration and all camp activities will take place at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg. Successful candidates will currently be practicing artists or fine art students, completing a post graduate degree or the third or fourth year of a bachelor’s degree. Candidates will demonstrate a strong visual arts background and good working knowledge of Canadian Art, including Inuit and First Nations. Experience and passion for working and educating children and in managing teams through leadership training, art camp involvement and other related skills is essential. Must attend any required training. Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening Check, Fluency in English, and current Emergency First Aid CPR-B or higher is required.
