Connect, Create, Collaborate

McMichael Family Accessible Program

Offered in partnership with Autism Ontario, Connect, Create, Collaborate is a series of family-oriented, accessible artmaking workshops developed for young artists living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their siblings. Each two-hour workshop, led by experienced McMichael Educators, combines explorations of the natural world with studio art activities. The program will provide an opportunity for the participants to create art at their own pace while enjoying social interaction in a safe and inclusive environment.

This program is intended for children aged 7 and up living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their siblings. The participants, members of Autism Ontario, will be able to join the program with their siblings and one supervising adult caregiver(one adult and up to three children/family).

Program Descriptions per Workshop

Colour Studio

Sharpen observational skills and enjoy magnificent colours in nature on a leisurely hike through the Humber River Valley. Returning to the studio, participants will experiment with the magical world of colours and textures to create a personalized multimedia composition.

Nature Studio

Participants will discover the beauty of natural shapes and sounds on a stroll through the beautiful Humber River Valley. Back in the studio, participants will contemplate their personal connections to nature and unleash their creativity through artmaking activities inspired by the natural world.

Printmaking Studio

Discover the magic of physical and visual textures in art! Learners will join an outdoor ”texture hunt” and then use found objects from nature and other provided items to experiment with printmaking techniques. Participants will learn about natural inks and how they can be incorporated into artwork!

Sculpture Studio

Learn to create three-dimensional art using a variety of tactile materials! Draw inspiration from the incredible shapes, patterns, textures, and colours of the Canadian landscape to create a unique personal sculpture!

Participation Guidelines

  • For children and youth (ages 7 and older) living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their siblings (max three children per family).
  • Pre-registration is required through Autism Ontario.
  • Maximum number of participants per workshop – 20 children (plus parents/caregivers/guardians).
  • Parents/caregivers/guardians must remain present throughout the workshop.
  • Parking and Gallery Admission are included.
  • Each caregiver/family will receive a Family Pass to enjoy the McMichael at their leisure on another day of their choice.

Please note:

This is not a transfer of care program. Parents/guardians/caregivers are responsible for their children for the duration of the workshop.

This includes:

  • Signing in and out of the workshop with their child.
  • Accompanying and assisting them to engage in activities if required.

*Please dress accordingly for the weather as portions of these workshops may take place outdoors.
