In-Person Spotlight Tours

About the tours

In-person tours return to the McMichael and offer a wonderful introduction to the gallery, its permanent collection, special exhibitions, and outdoor spaces. Each spotlight tour is led by one of our highly-trained docents and provides an up-close look at one facet of the art of Canada.

In-person tours are approximately 45 minutes in length and are free with gallery admission.

Early Days: Indigenous Art at the McMichael

Thursdays at 12:30 pm

Follow along with a McMichael Docent to learn about the colourful art of Norval Morrisseau. Also known as Copper Thunderbird, Morrisseau rose to fame in the 1960s when he developed the unique painting style then known as the Woodland School. Today this art style is called Anishnaabe painting, a reference to the artist’s heritage, and the unique pictographic style that influenced many other Indigenous artists and has had an indelible impact on Canadian art.

Rajni Perera: Futures

Fridays at 12:30 pm

On this Docent-led tour, discover the art of Rajni Perera one of Canada’s most promising contemporary multimedia artists. Drawing deeply on the artistic traditions of her birthplace, Sri Lanka, as well as Indian miniature painting, medieval armour, and science fiction, Perera has created a body of work that spans feminist and diasporic themes, while contemplating survival in an environmentally degraded future.

Spotlight on: Gathie Falk & William Kurelek

Saturdays & Sundays
 at 12:30 pm

Delve into the worlds of Gathie Falk and William Kurelek in this docent-led Spotlight Tour.
The tour starts with William Kurelek and will focus on the McMichael’s major new acquisition of a suite of 16 paintings entitled Jewish Life in Canada. Painted in the mid-1970s, Ukrainian-Canadian Kurelek intended the suite as a gesture across the cultural divide, demonstrating his open-mindedness toward Canadians of cultural and religious backgrounds different from his own. The tour continues with Gathie Falk: Revelations where visitors will explore piles of fruit, floating cabbages, and expanses of brightly coloured flowerbeds by one of Canada’s most visionary and experimental artists.

Lawren Harris "Mt Lefroy"

Spotlight On: Conversations: Masterworks from the Collection

Thursdays – Sundays at 2:00 pm

This docent-led tour leads visitors through the Canadian art pantheon in our new exhibition Conversations which features diverse works selected from the Gallery’s extensive permanent collection. Aimed to convey something of its current breadth and taking particular pleasure in placing apparently disparate works in creative conversation with one another, the tour will explore works from the Group of Seven, Emily Carr, David Milne, Kenoujuak Ashevak, Rebecca Belmore, Edward Burtynsky, Prudence Heward, Gershon Iskowitz, Tom Thomson and others.
