In-Person Spotlight Tours

About the tours

In-person tours return to the McMichael and offer a wonderful introduction to the gallery, its permanent collection, special exhibitions, and outdoor spaces. Each spotlight tour is led by one of our highly-trained docents and provides an up-close look at one facet of the art of Canada.

In-person tours are approximately 45 minutes in length and are free with gallery admission.

Spotlight On: William Kurelek

Thursdays at 12:30 pm
& Saturday, August 27 at 2:00 pm

This tour explores the work of beloved Ukrainian Canadian painter William Kurelek (1927-77) and will focus on the McMichael’s major new acquisition of Kurelek’s suite of 16 paintings entitled Jewish Life in Canada. Painted in the mid-1970s, Kurelek intended the suite as a gesture across the cultural divide, implicitly demonstrating his open-mindedness toward Canadians of cultural and religious backgrounds different from his own.

Spotlight On: Outdoor Art at the McMichael

at 11:00 am

On this outdoor tour, enjoy a walk through the grounds and lean about the rich biodiversity of the Humber River Valley and the McMichael’s many outdoor artworks. The tour starts at the historic Tom Thomson shack where visitors will be able to explore a new site-specific artwork by RBC Emerging Artist-in-Residence Jen Aitken that responds in three-dimensions to the shack’s architecture. It continues with stops at other outdoor highlights, including the Artists’ Cemetery and includes a discussion of the Gallery’s long engagement with outdoor art and evolving relationship to the landscape.

Spotlight On: Wanda Koop

Fridays at 12:30 pm
& Sunday August 28 at 2:00 pm

This tour shines a light on the masterful painter of light and colour, Wanda Koop. Koop’s work has engaged with abstraction since her earliest days, and in her more recent paintings she explores colour and light as subjects in themselves, masterfully engineering her canvases through the application of dozens of layers of deftly controlled pigment. The resulting surfaces seem to glow from within, suggesting euphoric states of vision. This tour will also cover Koop’s Light Sticks—a suite of long, thin shaped works that bear strips of intense colour and patterning, arranged sculpturally against the wall—a breakthrough into the third dimension.

Spotlight On: The Group of Seven

Saturdays & Sundays at 2:00 pm
(Ends August 21, 2022)

Discover the origin, history and artistic styles of the members of the Group of Seven during this spotlight tour.  A McMichael docent will introduce every member of the group through some of their most well-known work from the McMichael’s permanent collection, and reveal hidden gems from the vaults, in this informative tour.

Spotlight on: Gathe Falk and Elisapee Ishulutaq

Saturdays & Sundays
 at 12:30 pm

Delve into the worlds of Gathie Falk and Elisapee Ishulutaq in this docent-led Spotlight Tour. The tour starts in Gathie Falk: Revelations where visitors will explore piles of fruit, floating cabbages, and expanses of brightly coloured flowerbeds by one of Canada’s most visionary and experimental artists. The tour continues with Elisapee Ishulutaq’s epic oil stick drawings of life in and around Pangnirtung, Nunavut, which draw us deeply into her way of seeing, transmitting an indelible view of life in the Arctic seen through her unique lens.
