Program Description

In this virtual studio experience, taught live through the Zoom platform, professional artist Robert Strickland will demonstrate his approach to still-life painting. Using demonstrations and personalized instruction, he will guide students through traditional painting techniques. Strickland will review key concepts such as shape, value, form and colour theory, and reinforce how these concepts are essential for beginner and intermediate painters looking to take their skills to the next level. Students will begin with charcoal, focusing on shape, value and form. Following their introduction to these key concepts, students will explore colour theory and work towards creating a full colour painting.

Level: Beginner/Intermediate. This is a fundamentals workshop that will focus on drawing and painting skills.

Materials: Not included with the workshop. View a list of suggested materials.

Requirements: An internet connection, microphone and camera-enabled computer or smartphone is required. This class will be delivered via the video conferencing app Zoom. You do not require a Zoom account to participate; the link to access the class will be sent to you in advance.

About the Instructor

Toronto-based artist Robert Strickland’s formal fine art education began at Sheridan College, where he immersed himself in the foundations of painting, colour theory, draftsmanship and design. These elements came together to form the heart of his current artistic practice. Strickland prides himself on his ability to tell stories through his artwork. His paintings have been met with commercial and critical success. Strickland’s works have been exhibited in Canada, the United States and China.
