Harris (1885-1970)Montreal River\, c. 1920oil on paperboard\, 27 x 34.7 cmGift of the Founders\, Robert and Signe McMichaelMcMichael Canadian Art Collection\n\n« Le groupe de sept artistes dont les tableaux sont ici réunis partagent depuis plusieurs années une vision commune de l’Art au Canada. »\n– Lawren Harris\, préface du catalogue accompagnant la première exposition du Groupe des Sept en mai 1920 \n\nLe 7 mai 1920\, sept artistes partageant « une vision commune » lancent un nouveau mouvement dans le cadre d’une exposition présentée à l’Art Museum of Toronto (actuel Musée des beaux-arts de l’Ontario). Les membres de ce « Groupe des Sept » sont tous des hommes : Lawren Stewart Harris\, James Edward Hervey MacDonald\, Alexander Young Jackson\, Arthur Lismer\, Frederick Horsman Varley\, Franklin Carmichael et Francis Hans (Frank\, puis Franz) Johnston. Sans doute prévue depuis 1913-1914\, la formation du Groupe a été différée par les événements\, notamment le début de Première Guerre mondiale à laquelle participent quatre des membres (Harris\, Jackson\, Lismer et Varley) et qui met brusquement fin aux études de Carmichael à Anvers. \nLes membres du Groupe\, tous des artistes connus\, sont amis et plusieurs d’entre eux travaillent comme dessinateurs publicitaires au sein de la même entreprise. Harris\, héritier des fabricants de machinerie agricole Massey-Harris\, est le seul à avoir une fortune personnelle. Sa richesse est sans conteste un atout\, mais c’est son dynamisme et sa détermination qui l’imposent comme le leader du Groupe. C’est dans sa luxueuse demeure au 63 Queen’s Park\, à Toronto\, que six des sept artistes se retrouvent pour fonder le Groupe des Sept en mars 1920. Jaskson\, qui peint dans la baie Georgienne\, n’est pas de la partie. Une autre absence se fait douloureusement sentir. Tom Thomson\, artiste\, ami\, confrère et source d’inspiration\, est mort au cours d’une tragique noyade dans le lac Canoe en juillet 1917. Harris écrira que Thomson « faisait partie intégrante de la formation et du développement [du Groupe] au même titre que les autres membres. » \nLe Groupe a présenté huit expositions. Perçus à l’origine comme des enfants terribles\, au moment de leur dernière exposition en 1932\, les membres du Groupe avaient réussi à repenser l’art canadien et s’imposaient comme le nouvel establishment de l’art. Johnston a quitté le Groupe dès 1924\, pour être remplacé en 1926 par Alfred Joseph Casson. En 1929 et 1932 respectivement\, Edwin Holgate et Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald se sont associés au Groupe. Tous\, à l’exception de J.E.H. MacDonald\, mort en 1932\, ont poursuivi leur carrière après la dissolution du Groupe\, celle de Casson se prolongeant sur une période de soixante ans. Cette exposition est consacrée à l’ensemble de la carrière de tous artistes. \nLa Collection McMichael d’art canadien a été créée en 1966 par Robert et Signe McMichael en grande partie pour célébrer l’œuvre du Groupe des Sept et certains de leurs contemporains. Ils se sont liés d’amitié avec Jackson\, Harris\, Varley\, Lismer\, Casson et Holgate et ont même logé Jackson à la fin de sa vie. He was commissioned to create a massive 80-foot installation piece for the Vancouver Mother\, Friend\, Small Bird which is on permanent display in Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum. which is on permanent display in Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum.   \nChrétien’s work demonstrates his quest for an artistic expression of his Anishinaabe identity\, which encompasses issues of language\, family\, place and self-determination. His distinctive style is influenced by the Woodland style of art common to his band\, Nipissing First Nation\, and his ongoing exploration of his heritage has him concentrating on distinct aspects of Ojibwe doodems (clans) and legends.  \ndonaldchretien.com \nMargaret Ferraro\nPavao Como Agua\npastel on paper\nBarrie-based artist and teacher Margaret Ferraro has exhibited throughout Canada and the United States\, including with the Pastel Society of America at the National Art Club in New York City\, and the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada outside Montreal. In 2009\, Ferraro was named a master pastelist by the Pastel Artists of Canada. In her work\, she continuously moves between landscape\, figural and floral subjects\, using a layering technique that incorporates a combination of charcoal\, ink\, acrylic paint and pastels.  \nmargaretferraro.com \nJohn Leonard\nAlgoma Campsite Off HWY 1\nacrylic on canvas\nToronto-based painter\, John Leonard\, is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy\, and has taught extensively at many of Ontario’s universities and art schools\, including OCADU\, the University of Toronto and York University. He is currently a faculty member of Fleming College’s Haliburton School of Art + Design. An internationally exhibiting artist who has mounted more than 350 exhibitions\, and experienced professional\, Leonard places great emphasis on the development of personal style\, and inspires young artists with his teachings on contemporary landscape painting\, Impressionism\, painting from a model\, and the theory and technique of the Group of Seven. \nJohn Leonard’s work is held in more than 40 public galleries and corporate collections\, including the National Gallery\, the Ontario Arts Council\, the Ministry of Culture and Recreation\, the Art Gallery of Algoma\, the Art Gallery of Sarnia\, the Art Gallery of Lindsay\, the Station Gallery (Whitby)\, CBS Records – New York and the Canada Development Corp. \nDavid McEown\nBreaking Light\nwatercolour on paper\nCanadian artist David McEown has used the medium of watercolour for the past 30 years to explore nature. David’s paintings celebrate some of the most beautiful\, yet fragile\, natural heritage of our planet. His paintings\, spanning from Antarctica to the North Pole\, are represented in collections worldwide. McEown is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society\, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design and an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. In 2005 and 2018\, he was awarded the prestigious A.J.
