Visitors can join a special drop-in heritage tour that will explore the history of the gallery\, its architecture\, and grounds. \nPlease note that CABIN cafe will close at 2 pm for a special event (final seating at 1 pm). Parking fees remain in effect. \nHeritage TourOn this special guided tour for Open Doors Vaughan\, discover the history of Kleinburg’s beloved McMichael Canadian Art Collection\, the second largest log building in Ontario. Learn about founders Robert and Signe McMichael and their relationship to visionary architect Leo Venchiarutti who designed both their original home in 1954 and the later additions that turned it into the gallery visitors know and love today. \nGet an up-close view of the McMichaels’ original home\, including the original entryway\, living area\, and lounge; outdoors see parts of the original home and former garage as well as the historic Tom Thomson Shack. The tour will conclude in the Artists’ Cemetery\, where visitors will learn about the McMichaels’ friendships with members of the Group of Seven. \nSaturday\,\nSeptember 28\, 2024 11 am\n12:30 pm\n2 pm\n3:30 pm Tours are approximately 45 minutes in length.

To combine her interests in art and science\, she then studied art conservation at Queen’s University and received a Master of Art Conservation (M.A.C.). She works at the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa\, Ontario\, as a senior conservation scientist\, specializing in the analysis of cultural heritage materials. Kate has ledmany scientific examination projects related to attribution and authentication of paintings. These projects included the interpretation of scientific imaging\, close visual examination of artist’s technique\, multi-instrumental chemical analysis\, and the correlation of scientific results with historical information. She has presented her research at numerous national and international conferences\, and she has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters. \nAlison Douglas\, B.F.A.\, M.A.C.\, is the conservator at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg\, Ontario. Alison Douglas completed her Bachelor of Fine Art and Master of Art Conservation (M.A.C.)\, specializing in paintings\, at Queen’s University. She has worked for 20 years at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg\, Ontario. For the past 18 years\, she has been their only conservator. As the McMichael collects exclusively Canadian art\, Alison has gained extensive knowledge of the methods and materials of the Group of Seven and their contemporaries as well as many other Canadian and Indigenous artists. Her research interests include the use of jute and its inherent conservation issues as a painting support used by early twentieth-century Canadian artists\, as well as the varied uses of artist materials in contemporary painting\, and preventive conservation. DESCRIPTION:Curatorial TalkAbstraction and Realism: The Versatile Genius of Bertram BrookerBertram Brooker was a painter\, graphic designer\, art critic\, writer\, musician\, and advertising executive. He gained notoriety on the Toronto cultural scene for his 1927 exhibition of his “world and spirit” paintings at the Arts and Letters Club. This exhibition is considered to be the first show of abstract art in Canada. After meeting Winnipeg artist Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald in 1929\, Brooker underwent a period of transition during which he combined elements of abstraction and representation to achieve what he called a “plus quality over traditional realism.” Art historian Michael Parke-Taylor\, who curated the exhibition\, will take us through Brooker’s career as he toggled between abstract and figurative strategies to serve an overarching belief that the fusion of art and life\, responding to mystical consciousness\, would foster a global spiritual and cultural revolution. \nSpeaker: Michael Parke-Taylor \nDate & TimeSunday\, February 25\nat 2 pm \nPriceRegistration Required. By the time the earliest artists arrived in Cobalt to sketch the lakes and hills were polluted and barely a blade of living grass stood upright. Yvonne McKague Housser and her circle of female artist friends\, Group of Seven founders Franklin Carmichael and A.Y. Jackson\, and their predecessors\, contemporaries and successors\, developed a remarkable visual legacy of art that sustained Cobalt’s presence on the international stage until the end of the 1930s.
