DESCRIPTION:Tom Thomson Virtual Public Tour\n\n\nAbout the tour \nInspired by an astute reading of the artist’s oeuvre by Ian Dejardin\, McMichael Executive Director\, this virtual tour invites viewers to explore the groundbreaking painting technique of Tom Thomson\, the ultimate Canadian modernist landscape painter. Based on exhibition stills\, the tour will present several of the artist’s large canvas and en plain air oil sketches that reveal the artistic brilliance of Thomson who\, through bold experimentation\, was able to achieve powerful artistic maturity during his tragically short career. \nAn internet connection\, microphone and camera-enabled computer\, tablet or smartphone is required. The virtual tour will be delivered via the video conferencing app Zoom. By the time the earliest artists arrived in Cobalt to sketch the lakes and hills were polluted and barely a blade of living grass stood upright. Yet\, between the thrill of discovery and remains of excavation\, the artists found numerous reasons to be engaged. Yvonne McKague Housser and her circle of female artist friends\, Group of Seven founders Franklin Carmichael and A.Y. Jackson\, and their predecessors\, contemporaries and successors\, developed a remarkable visual legacy of art that sustained Cobalt’s presence on the international stage until the end of the 1930s. For today’s concert\, we take inspiration from the words of Ian A.C. Dejardin\, Executive Director of the McMichael\, who describes Tom Thomson\, Canada’s pre-eminent modern painter thus: “… because the career is so brief—really less than four years—it is less of an arc and more of an explosion.” \nOur program includes works by three composers who shared with Thomson the fate of short but explosive working careers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1792)\, Hyacinthe Jadin (1776–1800)\, and Franz Schubert (1797–1828). The balance of the program is drawn from four stars of the late 18th century whose lights burned more steadily\, but brightly just the same: Luigi Boccherini\, Felice Giardini\, Giovanni Battista Noferi\, and Joseph Bologne\, Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges. \nPerformers\nPatricia Ahern\, violin\nPatrick G. This work explores the rich history and geography of the Toronto Carrying Place Trail and the people who dwelt along it.
