We apologize for any inconvenience.\n \nIn partnership with the Department of Visual Art and Art History at York University\, the McMichael is pleased to present the 2023 Goldfarb Lecture in Visual Arts by Meryl McMaster\, a Canadian artist of nehiyaw (Plains Cree)\, Métis\, British and Dutch ancestry who explores the self in relation to land\, lineage\, history\, culture and the more-than-human world. Led by art historian Michèle Grandbois\, this presentation will explore the works of Cornelius Krieghoff\, Jean Paul Lemieux\, J.W. Morrice\, Clarence Gagnon\, Paul-Émile Borduas\, and Jean Paul Riopelle. Grandbois will also examine the distinction between Quebec and Canadian art\, as well as the notion of territory\, both real and imaginary\, together with the search for identity that informed the works of these talented Quebec artists \nAbout the speaker\n\nMichèle Grandbois is a former teacher of art history at Laval University and former curator of modern art at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. The project began as a commemoration of the old Carrying Place portage that once ran along the Humber River from Lake Ontario to Lake Simcoe and was a vital passage from southern Ontario to Georgian Bay and the upper Great Lakes. As their work developed\, the artists began to consider the role of the Carrying Place in the deeper history and enduring legacy of Indigenous economic\, political\, and cultural exchange in Southern Ontario.\n\nAbout the speakers\n\nBonnie Devine is an Anishinaabe artist\, writer and educator. Her assistant\, Mariah Meawasige\, is a recent graphic design graduate of OCAD University. Both are members of the Serpent River Anishinaabe/Ojibwe First Nation. SUMMARY:Modernisms Inside & Out: Canadian Women Artists History Initiative Conference
DESCRIPTION:Modernisms Inside & Out: Canadian Women Artists History Initiative Conference\n\n\nSeptember 30 – October 2\, 2021\n\n  \nAbout the event\nThis September\, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection will launch Uninvited\, a major exhibition on women and art in the 1920s and 30s.  The exhibition offers an important opportunity to reassess women’s visual and material engagements with the modern as a cultural force in Canada. \nThe social changes effected by modernization brought significant advances for many women: full legal personhood\, new careers\, the vote and increasing opportunities for public and artistic leadership. For others\, however\, modernity produced further exclusion and repression. As racialized rhetoric intensified\, immigration policy tightened and settlers sought to eliminate Indigenous cultural expression or confine it to the past. Economic transformation endangered pre-industrial ways of life and their attendant cultural forms\, but also stimulated new kinds of artistic production. \nHow did the visual and material cultures of Canadian women position them both inside and outside of the modern?
