SUMMARY:2025 McMichael En Plein Air Competition - Call for Artists
DESCRIPTION:2025 McMichael En Plein Air CompetitionCall for ArtistsOrganized by the McMichael Canadian Art CollectionCompetition DatesSaturday\, August 2 –\nMonday\, September 29\, 2025 Artworks Online Submission DeadlineTuesday October 14\, 2025\, by 5 pmSubmission Forms (Adults)Submission Forms (Children & Youth)The McMichael is pleased to announce the return of the annual En Plein Air Competition\, running from August 2 to September 29. During this time\, artists are invited to work en plein air anywhere on the McMichael’s grounds\, in and around the charming Village of Kleinburg\, and in the historic Humber River Valley along the Carrying Place Trail\, one of the most historically important Indigenous trading routes in North America. \nThis year\, we invite participants to draw inspiration from two very different but equally captivating exhibitions currently on view at the McMichael: Morrice in Venice and Rita Leistner: The Tree Planters. James Wilson Morrice’s atmospheric Venetian pochades\, which continue to resonate with today’s audiences\, affirm the enduring relevance of traditional en plein air practice. In contrast\, Rita Leistner’s dynamic photographs offer a fresh\, innovative perspective on experiencing the outdoors\, weaving narrative and action into her work. \nBuilding on last year’s success\, artists are encouraged to explore the landscape genre through one of two thematic categories. The first\, Contemporary Landscape\, reflects a traditional approach inspired by modernist masters like Morrice. The second category\, Landscape Re-Imagined\, invites artists to channel the spirit of Leistner’s compositions—expressing how climate change and urbanization\, mediated through technology\, have transformed the natural environment. \nFor young artists aged 6–15\, Children and Youth Categories will be supported through two Paint-Out sessions. These sessions include a brief introduction to en plein air techniques by a McMichael Educator\, complimentary admission to the grounds\, and free art materials. \nAdditionally\, any artwork created within and depicting the Village of Kleinburg will be eligible for the special Kleinburg Village Prize. \nIt’s time to get outside and create your masterpiece. Best of luck to all participants! \nCompetition CategoriesAdultArtists aged 16 and over are invited to submit one artwork per participant* in either of the two thematic categories: \n\nContemporary Landscape;\nLandscape Re-imagined.\n\nMedium options: \n\nWorks on canvas/panel (canvas size 16 x 20 inches only);\nWorks on paper (format 11 x 14 & 14 x 18 inches);\nPhotography** (print format 11 x 14 inches).\n\nImportant notes: \n* Only one submission per artist will be accepted. Multiple submissions will result in automatic disqualification.\n** If shortlisted\, artists are responsible for printing their photographic works. \nAny variations in size must be pre-approved by McMichael staff. For special size requests or questions\, please contact: programs@mcmichael.com \nWork may be completed at home or in the studio. \nChildren & YouthPaint-Out SessionsSundays September 14 and 21\, 2025 \n10:30 am to 12:30 pm \nRegisterFree programming and parking. Parents or caregivers must accompany their child throughout the session. \nAt the end of each session\, participants will be encouraged to submit the images of their work (one work only). Submissions will be accepted in two age categories: children for artists 6 to 12-years old\, and youth for older participants 13 to 15-years-old. McMichael staff will assist with the submission process. \nCompetition ProcessFrom Saturday\, August 2 to Monday\, September 29\, 2025\, participating artists are welcome to work en plein air on the McMichael grounds. Artists are also encouraged to set their canvases in Kleinburg Village and along the shores of the Canadian Heritage Humber River. \nDuring this period\, artists will receive complimentary parking and access to the McMichael grounds upon request. Please note that access to the gallery spaces requires a general admission ticket. \nArtists are responsible for bringing all their own supplies\, including materials\, easels\, seating\, and any other necessary equipment. \nAll artworks created during the competition remain the property of the artists. Currently studying at a private college in Tkaronto\, she is training to be an Expressive Arts Therapist. \nThroughout her life Emily has worked with children and youth in the arts and outdoor recreation. She is currently working at a studio providing inclusive and accessible arts-based programming specialized in diverse neuro & physical disabilities. Founder of the Forest Bathing Club\, Emily has guided walks throughout the GTA for a variety of communities. She received a BA in Photography from TMU and a Masters in Communication & Culture from York+TMU focusing on The North and Canadian Art. Emily is passionate about helping Canadians build relationships with land through Forest Therapy and the Expressive Arts. \nA Note From Emily and What to Expect From the WalkThis is a very slow and relaxed walk of approximately 3 hrs and with a route no more than 1 km. Unlike hikes where there is a destination\, these walks aren’t about going anywhere in particular. We’re not going there\, we’re arriving here. \nWe start with an opening circle to meet each other and ground ourselves in the space. Throughout the walk\, you will be given a series of “invitations\,” all of which allow you to drop into the body and be in relation with the environment. Guides work in partnership with the forest to see what nature is offering that day. This means every walk is a completely different experience. \nThere will be opportunities on the walk to share stories and connect with other participants. The walk will close with a circle. This is a come as you are space\, meaning all ways of being are welcome.

SUMMARY:Abstract Painting Workshop with Lydia Panart - September 2025
DESCRIPTION:Lydia PanartAbstract Painting WorkshopThis in-person two-day workshop will offer artists the opportunity to immerse themselves into the abstract realm. \nArtist Lydia Panart will show participants the steps to create an abstract painting from the conceptual idea to the final resolution. This time\, playing with a variety of coloured papers from different sources in a simple collage application\, Lydia will encourage students to explore a couple of compositions as small sketches (main inspirational ideas) to be developed as a second step on a canvas by changing scale (from a small scale in the first design\, to the actual size of the canvas). In this step\, collage won’t necessarily be a part of the final painting. \n“As an artist\, my intention has always been to engage the viewer in a visual dialogue with me\, looking for that authentic connection\, for a richer experience beyond our individual realities and perceptions.” \nThrough visual explanations about the elements & principles of design\, Lydia will be guiding in composition\, colour\, contrast/transitions\, etc\, including painting techniques demonstrations along the process. Lydia will be offering one-on-one feedback and group discussions looking for a rich process for everyone. \nThis program is suitable for those with some previous painting experience looking to enhance their own artistic voice. \nMaterials ListDownloadDate & Time\nSaturday\, September 6 & Sunday September 7\, 2025\nfrom 10 am to 4 pm  \nProgram Cost\n$240 – General Public\n$192 – McMichael Members \nLocationMcMichael Canadian Art Collection\n10365 Islington Ave\,\nKleinburg\, ON L0J 1C0 RegisterTicket sales are non-refundable. \nAbout the InstructorLydia Panart is an award-winning artist from Buenos Aires\, Argentina. SUMMARY:Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra - Painted in Sound: Venice and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Tafelmusik Baroque OrchestraPainted in Sound: Venice and BeyondFor centuries\, Venice has inspired artists with its beauty and vibrant culture. \nFor composers like Vanhal and Mysliveček\, the city offered a gateway into Italian musical life at the turn of the 19th century. It was also during this period that the double bass emerged as a true solo and chamber instrument\, thanks in no small part to the virtuosity of Venetian-born Domenico Dragonetti. \nThis program explores the expressive possibilities of an unusual trio: violin\, cello\, and double bass. Through the elegant voices of Mysliveček in Venice\, and Albrechtsberger and Michael Haydn in Vienna\, we hear the bass in a bold new role—no longer just foundational\, but lyrical\, agile\, and expressive. \nThe result is a rich sound world where classical style meets daring invention\, redefining the boundaries of chamber music. \nDate & TimeFriday\, September 12\, 20258 pmCost$50 General Public\n$40 Gallery & Tafelmusik Members \nRegistration required. DESCRIPTION:Stand Up\, Stay Strong!Free Family SundaySunday\, November 16\, 2025Free Admission \nIn a world filled with challenges\, this Family Sunday invites visitors of all ages to explore their inner strengths\, talents\, and the courage to stand up for themselves and others. Through art-making\, storytelling\, and performance\, the day celebrates resilience and the transformative power of creativity—culminating in The Schoolyard Carmen\, a lively and inspiring production by Shoestring Opera. \nGet TicketsActivities and Workshops11 am to 4 pmAll AgesLocation: Education SpaceThe Art of Self-PortraitureDrop-in Art Making WorkshopExpress your inner strengths and talents in this self-portrait workshop open to experimentation and mixed media approach. Led by artist and educator Melanie Billark this workshop will defy the traditional portraiture genre while nurturing confidence and self awareness. \n10:45 am12:45 pmAges: 6 to 12Location: Meeting in Grand HallImages of Hope\, Images of StrengthStorytelling CircleExploring the exhibition Early Days: Indigenous Art at the McMichael\, this storytelling session will focus on Indigenous artists whose works resisted colonial narratives and stereotypes and helped Indigenous communities retain their traditional values and assert their cultural identity. \n2 pmAll AgesLocation: Gallery 8The Schoolyard Carmenby Shoestring OperaMeet Carmen—a spirited newcomer to Canada who loves to sing\, dance flamenco\, and be unapologetically herself. On her first day at a new school\, she faces a challenge from the “coolest kid” in class\, Tory Adair. Instead of backing down\, Carmen stands up to him\, setting off a whirlwind of events. This lively adaptation of Bizet’s classic opera tackles themes of bullying\, difference\, independence\, and the healing power of the arts. With Bizet’s bewitching\, infectious music\, Carmen’s flamenco dancing\, and the action-packed story\, The Schoolyard Carmen has proved to be Shoestring’s most popular adaptation yet! \nPhoto & Video ReleasePlease be advised that staff from the McMichael may be capturing photos and video footage during our special events.
