DESCRIPTION:Sergei de Jonge created a birchbark guitar inspired by the work\, and historical context\, of artist J.E.H. MacDonald. The luthier will be in a moderated discussion with musician Emma Rush before a special live performance with this guitar. \nJ.E.H. MacDonald (1873 1932)Logs on the Gatineau River c. 1914\, oil on paperboard\, 20.3 x 25.4 cm\, Purchase 1973\, McMichael Canadian Art Collection\, 1981.85.5\nSergei de Jonge was born in the The Hague\, Netherlands\, in 1949\, and moved to Canada in 1953.  In the early 1970s he apprenticed under Jean Larrivée and Patt Lister\, and quickly distinguished himself as a builder of classical and steel-string instruments. De Jonge strove not to change the form of guitar as to perfect its structure\, playability\, and tone. The result is a comfortable concert guitar pure in form and true to the essence of the instrument. Sergei de Jonge has built over one thousand guitars over his 46-year career\, has taught guitar-making for over twenty years\, and has trained several apprentices\, including all six of his children\, the eldest of whom now builds under her own name. \nAward-winning Canadian guitarist Emma Rush is based in Hamilton\, Ontario. She is an unstoppable performer touring throughout North and South America\, Europe and Asia. DESCRIPTION:Luthier Linda Manzer created this remarkable guitar inspired by several works by Lawren Harris\, and with the spirit: “if Lawren Harris were to build a guitar\, what would it look like?” Manzer will be in a moderated conversation with musician Tony McManus about the creation of the guitar before a live performance\, where McManus will perform. \nLawren S. Harris (1885-1970)\, Preparatory Drawing for Mt. Lefroy\, c. 1930\, graphite on paper\, 19.3 x 25.5 cmGift of Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Harris in memory of Lawren S. Harris.McMichael Canadian Art Collection\, 1975.64\nToronto-born Linda Manzer has been designing and building world-class flat top and archtop acoustic guitars since 1974. She studied with master luthiers Jean Larrivée and the late James D’Aquisto. She attended both the Sheridan College of Art and Design and the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in the early seventies. Linda builds flat top\, archtop and harp guitars\, and her creative journey has given birth to many cutting-edge innovations\, including the “Wedge”\, an ergonomic tapered guitar body shape originally designed for the renowned 42-stringed Pikasso guitar and available on all models since. Other interesting instruments include the sitar guitar\, the fretless nylon archtop guitar and harp guitars with as many as fifty-two strings. Many discerning musicians\, including Pat Metheny\, Bruce Cockburn\, Paul Simon\, Milton Nascimento\, Liona Boyd\, Carlos Santana\, Gary Larson\, Henrik Andersen\, Stephen Fearing and Julian Lage\, play her instruments. Her guitars have been displayed at the Smithsonian\, Washington\, D.C.; the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; and the Museum of Civilization\, Ottawa. In 2012\, she and Pat Metheny received The Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Award for innovative design. \nTony McManus substituted for guitarist Soig Siberil in the supergroup Celtic Fiddle Festival in 1988\, which consisted of fiddlers Johnny Cunningham\, Kevin Burke\, and Christian Lemaitre. He has worked as accompanist for Catriona MacDonald and for singer\, guitarist\, and fiddler Brian McNeill. McManus’s album Return to Kintail was a duet with Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser. In addition to traditional Celtic music\, McManus explored classical music when he performed Erik Satie for a movie by Neal Jordan. Mandolinist Mike Marshall prodded him to learn Bach’s E Major Prelude. He performed compositions by J.S. Bach at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City with jazz fusion guitarist John McLaughlin. His first self-titled album was released in 1996 on Greentrax Recordings. His second album\, Pourquoi Quebec?\, was recorded in Quebec\, Canada and released on the same label in January. His third album\, Ceol More\, was released in 2002 and achieved widespread critical acclaim. It includes a version of Charles Mingus’s “Goodbye Porkpie Hat”. DESCRIPTION:Included in General Admission \nFree for members Adult – $18\nStudent/Senior – $15\nFamily $36\n(Special Prices Tuesday) \nGET TICKETSDelve into various string instruments and their cultural importance across the world through instrument-making workshops\, art workshops\, and in-gallery iPad activities. \niPad Workshop\nStarting at 12\, 1 and 3 pm in the Grand Hall \nExplore the effect of sound on the visual experience. Throughout this innovative\, 30-minute iPad workshop\, discover and experiment within the McMichael’s gallery spaces to create your own musical response inspired by the artworks that are currently on display. \nFamily Artmaking Workshop\nDrop-in workshop at the Pine Cottage: 11 am to 5 pm \nThis mixed media and instrument-building workshop will lead participants of all ages through the steps and processes of creating and decorating their very own Brazilian percussion instrument: the ganzá! \nParticipants will be inspired by the rich history of Brazilian music and design culture to create this simple shaker. The ganzá is fundamental to any traditional Brazilian samba ensemble as it is often used to determine and keep rhythm. The ganzá is shaped like a cylinder and made of metal or a hand-woven basket\, and is traditionally filled with pebbles or stones. \nMusical Performance\nTio Chorinho in Gallery 8: 2pm \nToronto’s Tio Chorinho (pronounced shoh-REEN-yo) is the only ensemble in Canada dedicated to performing Brazilian choro music. The group performs regularly at events and festivals throughout Toronto and southern Ontario\, and its reputation is growing nationally and beyond following the debut CD release of Chora Brazil\, which earned two nominations from the 2016 Canadian Folk Music Awards (for World Music and Instrumental Group of the Year). The group features Eric Stein (mandolin)\, Avital Zemer (seven-string guitar)\, Maninho Costa (percussion)\, Milos Popovic  (cavaquinho)\, and Andre Valerio (guitar and cavaquinho).\n\nChoro (pronounced SHOH-roh) is primarily an instrumental musical form that originated in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro in the late-19th century. Choro is the original Brazilian soul music – a unique marriage of popular and classical European styles with Afro-Brazilian influences. It is the foundation of many modern Brazilian music styles\, and is often described in American terms as “the New Orleans jazz of Brazil.” Exciting\, energetic\, soulful\, intimate\, nostalgic and virtuosic\, choro is an infectious urban-folk style with universal appeal. \nInspired primarily by the recordings and compositions of the great Brazilian mandolin master Jacob do Bandolim (1918-1969)\, Tio Chorinho also performs music by other essential composers of the genre\, including Ernesto Nazareth\, Pixinguinha\, Waldir Azevedo\, Luiz Americano\, and others. Tio Chorinho recently began to integrate original compositions in its repertoires\, while still capturing the authentic spirit of choro. Wherever Tio Chorinho performs\, audience members are consistently thrilled by the group’s virtuosity and easy-going charm on stage.

DESCRIPTION:Luthier David Wren created this guitar inspired by the artist Franklin Carmichael\, and Wren will be in a moderated conversation with musician Mike Francis about the creation of the guitar before a live performance\, where Francis will perform. \nFranklin Carmichael (1890 – 1945)\, Farm\, Haliburton\, 1940\, oil on hardboard\, 96.3 x 122 cm\, Given In Memory of Alice and Douglas Bales by Their FamilyMcMichael Canadian Art Collection\, 1997.2\nDavid Wren was born in 1952 and raised in Toronto. In 1974\, he was accepted as an apprentice by Jean Larrivée\, who many consider to be the father of Canadian guitar building. During his tenure at the Larrivée workshop\, Wren worked alongside several of his now-Group of Seven Guitar Project luthiers. By 1977\, he opened his own guitar-building shop.  During the seventies and eighties\, David was privileged to build guitars from celebrated musicians Bruce Cockburn\, Jackson Browne\, and Joan Baez. In 1990\, David became a partner in the Twelfth Fret Guitarists’ Pro Shop in Toronto—Canada’s premier custom guitar store—but by 2009\, the call to build guitars became too loud to ignore. The last seven years have seen Wren guitars commissioned locally\, nationally\, and internationally by players from New York to Kuala Lumpur. \nMike Francis is considered by many to be the most recorded guitar player in Canada. He has spent over 35 years working in the Toronto recording scene on literally thousands of jingles\, numerous tv shows\, films\, and recording projects for variety artists and producers. The various styles he plays include Blues\, R+B\, Funk\, Jazz\, Pop\, Folk and Country music.  He has recorded with Alanis Morissette\, Jann Arden\, Enrique Iglesias\, Anne Murray\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Nelly Furtado\, Kim MItchell\, Alannah Myles\, Jesse Winchester\, Smokey Robinson\, and many others. \nModerator Kerry Crawford is musician and producer who has spent over thirty years in recording studios\, working in a production capacity for advertising music\, TV shows such as Second City Television\, and producing records for noted Canadian artists such as Bruce Cockburn and Jane Siberry. Kerry has enjoyed working with a diverse group of musicians whose venues have ranged from the sidewalk to our finest concert halls. Being a guitarist himself\, he has taken a special interest in the evolution of the instrument and is a great admirer of the remarkably talented luthiers participating in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection’s The Group of Seven Guitar Project. \n  \n  \nAt 1pm\, an in-gallery talk will precede the Acoustic Conversation event.

DESCRIPTION:  \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT \n  \nLuthier George Gray created this guitar inspired by the work and life of Frank Johnston. Gray and Jonhston share a passion for flight\, and Gray’s guitar incorporates a photograph he took from his own two-seater airplane of the same view of Beamsville that Johnston painted from above. Gray will be in a moderated conversation with musician Don Ross about the creation of the guitar before a live performance\, where Ross will perform. \nFrank Johnston (1888 -1949)\, Thunderers c. 1922\, oil on board\, 27.4 x 34.5 cm\, Gift of E. Louise and R.G.K. Morrison\, McMichael Canadian Art Collection\, 1977.41\nGeorge Gray started playing guitar at the age of thirteen\, and by the time he was in his mid-twenties he had developed a love of the acoustic guitar. A chance meeting in early 1976 with Jean Larrivée at a Toronto music store led to a three-year apprenticeship with him in both Toronto and Victoria\, B.C. In late 1978\, Gray returned to Ontario and opened his own shop on the outskirts of Toronto in the town of Markham. In the 1990s\, Gray’s life took an unexpected turn when his father became ill and he was called upon to run the family business. It was during this time that Gray developed an interest in aviation and acquired his private pilot’s licence. In 2008\, Gray returned to guitar building. The atmosphere of sharing and mutual support that existed among the luthiers of the early days of the Larrivée shop continues to this day. \nDonald James Ross is a Canadian fingerstyle guitarist. He is the only person to twice win the US National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship (1988 and 1996). His album Huron Street reached the top ten on the Billboard new age chart. \nModerator William “Grit” Laskin wears many hats.  His primary one is that of guitar maker\, a profession he has pursued since 1971.  His steel-string\, classical and flamenco guitars are known and coveted around the world. Players of his instruments include: k.d. lang\, Ben Mink\, Rik Emmett\, Tom Cochrane\, Jesse Cook\, Wayne Johnson\, Tom Chapin\, Garnet Rogers\, Stan Rogers\, Ottmar Liebert\, Ken Whiteley\, James Keelaghan\, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer\, Kobukuro (Japan)\, Lillebjørn Nilsen (Norway).  Commissions from guitar-maker colleagues and others within the trade include: Bill Collings (Collings Guitars\, Texas)\, Roger Sadowsky (Sadowsky Guitars\, New York)\, Dick Boak (director\, Martin Guitars\, Pennsylvania)\, Larry Sifel (pres.\, Pearl Works\, Maryland) and Chuck Erickson (Duke of Pearl LLC). Featuring reproductions of upwards of 130 original artworks and archival materials from the exhibition\, it is a visual conversation between major works by Canada’s own feminist art pioneer Joyce Wieland and masterworks by Canadian painting cult figure Tom Thomson. A third artist in focus for this publication is Zachari Logan (b. 1980)\, who adds yet another anachronistic comparison and point of influence into this unexpected mix. \nJoin Dr. Sarah Stanners lead author and curator of the exhibition to discuss the ins and outs of art publishing in Canada.

Duggan-Smith will be in a moderated conversation with musician Kevin Breit about the creation of the guitar before a live performance\, where Breit will perform. \nArthur Lismer (1885-1969)\, Sketchbook 23 (Nova Scotia)\, 1917-1919\, graphite\, colour pastels on paper\, 30.4 × 24 × 0.8 cm Arthur Lismer Collection\, Purchased with the assistance of a Movable Cultural Property grant accorded by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the terms of the Cultural Property Export and Import Act\, and with the generous support of the McMichael Canadian Art Foundation\, McMichael Canadian Art Collection Archives\nTony Duggan-Smith \nTony Duggan- Smith was born in Saskatoon in 1953\, and spent his early life in England. After studying Fine Art for three years in the UK\, Tony mentored with Michael Craig-Martin (Damien Hirst/Young British Artists) and returned to Canada in the early seventies to attend the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design\, an international hub of the conceptual avant-garde at the time. Duggan-Smith’s passion for the arts was interdisciplinary. At age 22\, an apprenticeship with Jean Larrivée allowed him to explore the design\, building\, and restoration of musical instruments while also writing and performing.  In addition\, Tony also worked as a key set designer with legends such as producer Herbert Leonard (Route 66/Rin Tin Tin). \nKevin Breit is a Canadian guitarist\, vocalist\, and singer-songwriter from McKerrow\, Ontario\, Canada. His group\, The Sisters Euclid\, has been a fixture at the Orbit Room in Toronto for the past 13 years. Breit has worked as a touring guitarist or session musician with a variety of musicians including Norah Jones\, Celine Dion\, Marc Jordan\, Molly Johnson\, Harry Manx\, Holly Cole\, Serena Ryder and the Rankins. He also performs as a solo artist and as a member of the folk group Folkalarm. He was awarded the 2012 Juno Award for Best Instrumental Album as member The Stretch Orchestra. Breit has performed on recordings that have earned 13 Grammy Awards. \n  \n  \nAt 1pm\, an in-gallery talk will precede the Acoustic Conversation event.

DESCRIPTION:MULTI-DAY workshop Nov 11\, 12th.  Registration required. Materials not included.\nDesigned for advanced artists\, this course will assist participants in developing a personal voice when painting the land. Through observation and analysis\, participants will interpret landscape through relevant principles of design and then reconstruct it in paint using individual styles and techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring research material\, sketches\, or photographs to be used as a base for the work completed in class. \nJohn Leonard\, a Toronto-based painter\, is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts\, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) and Sir Sandford Fleming College. DESCRIPTION:Engaging both epic-scale and stylistically historic techniques\, Zachari Logan’s meticulous drawings involve a visual language that speaks to the metaphoric as well as the metaphysical. Below are details of the first event in this series. \nJoin the McMichael and Elders Jim Dumont and Shelley Charles\, and Lynn Short from Humber College as they unveil the location of a new Ceremonial Garden. Ojibway Elder Garry Sault from the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation will also be here to share his knowledge through ceremony and storytelling revolving around the Indigenous presence and use of the land on which the McMichael is situated. \n \nSnowshoe Hike\nMeeting House\, 1 and 2:45 pm \nJoin Kortright Centre for Conservation staff on a snowshoe hike to explore the beauty of nature (we will hike without snowshoes if there is not enough snow). Learn to identify some winter plants and find neat animal tracks on the ground\, all while exploring the wonderful sights and sounds that nature has to offer. \nFeel free to explore the nature touch table where you will find real furs\, skulls and bones for everyone to touch\, examine and learn about. \nCeremony and Talk\nMeeting House\, 1:45pm \nJoin Elders Shelley Charles and Garry Sault for an Indigenous ceremony\, followed by storytelling revolving around the Indigenous presence and use of the land on which the McMichael is situated. \niPad Workshops\nMeeting House\, 1 and 2:45 pm \nTake part in a fun artmaking activity within the gallery spaces.
