SUMMARY:« Une Vision Commune » Les 100 Ans Du Groupe Des Sept
DESCRIPTION:« Une Vision Commune » Les 100 Ans Du Groupe Des Sept\n25 janvier 2020 – printemps 2021\nLawren S. Harris (1885-1970)Montreal River\, c. 1920oil on paperboard\, 27 x 34.7 cmGift of the Founders\, Robert and Signe McMichaelMcMichael Canadian Art Collection\n\n« Le groupe de sept artistes dont les tableaux sont ici réunis partagent depuis plusieurs années une vision commune de l’Art au Canada. » \nLe Groupe a présenté huit expositions. \nCuratorial Talk with Ian Dejardin\nJanuary 25\, 2020marchandise d’expositionJ.E.H. SUMMARY:Tom Thomson
DESCRIPTION:View eventEXHIBITION MERCHANDISETom Thomson\nOn view through April 3\, 2022\n\nAbout the Exhibition \nTom Thomson is often wrongly assumed to have been a member of the Group of Seven. He almost certainly would have been had he not died too soon. Although forever enshrined in Canadian legend as a young man—he was thirty-nine when he died—he would in fact have been the second eldest of the Group\, after J.E.H. MacDonald\, but he found his artistic voice late. He worked as a commercial artist under MacDonald at Grip Ltd.\, and it was the older artist who encouraged him to take painting seriously. \nThomson travelled to Algonquin Park for the first time in 1912\, returning every summer thereafter. His career as a serious artist really lasted only three or four years\, hitting its stride in 1914 when Dr. James MacCallum made an offer (also made to A.Y. Jackson) to underwrite his living expenses. This generosity allowed Thomson to concentrate fully on his art\, and he became one of the first artists to share a studio\, with Jackson\, in the newly built Studio Building in January 1914. Later he moved into the wooden shack nearby (now reconstructed at the McMichael)\, where he was to spend his winters painting. \nBy the end of 1914\, Thomson was beginning to disconcert the much more experienced Jackson with the brilliance of his oil sketches\, and over the next couple of years he electrified his friends with hundreds of those dazzling sketches\, while producing a handful of large-scale works that have become Canadian icons. \nDespite his considerable reputation as an outdoorsman\, canoeist\, and Algonquin guide\, Thomson drowned in Canoe Lake in July 1917 in circumstances that have remained mysterious ever since. His loss was a true tragedy for Canadian art and was keenly felt by his friends\, but his influence proved fundamental to the founding of the Group of Seven in 1920. \nFor media inquiries and more information\, please visit the Press Room. \nTom Thomson (1877 – 1917)Byng Inlet\, Georgian Bay\, 1914-1915oil on canvas71.5 x 76.3 cmPurchase with the Assistance of Donors and Wintario\nExploring Tom Thomson\nFebruary 10\, 2021\nVirtual Celebration of A Like Vision: The Group of Seven & Tom Thomson\nDecember 10\, 2020

Co-curated by Gaëtane Verna\, Director of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto\, and Sarah Milroy\, Chief Curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection\, this exhibition explores a body of work that recalls the history of the African diaspora and blurs the line between representation and abstraction. With a painterly approach\, Trinidadian-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos explored the structures that confine and define us — whether political\, social or architectural — while calling on her extensive travel experiences and understanding of human behaviour to imbue her work with limitless energy. She holds a unique place in the history of Canadian art\, adding to a narrative from which Black\, Indigenous\, and people of colour’s voices have for too long been excluded. \nThis free interactive experience provides our visitors with the opportunity to examine images of artworks up close while remaining responsibly distanced in their own homes.
