SUMMARY:McMichael En Plein Air Competition Call for Artists 2023
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR ARTISTS\nEn Plein Air Competition\nOrganized by McMichael Canadian Art Collection\n\nCompetition Dates\nSunday July 30 to Tuesday October 10\, 2023 \nArt Submission Deadline\nThursday\, October 12\, 2023\, by 5 pm EST \nProject Description\nThe McMichael is thrilled to announce the return of the annual En Plein Air Competition. During the course of the competition\, between July 30 and October 10\, artists are invited to work en plein air anywhere on the McMichael grounds\, in and around the charming Village of Kleinburg and in the historic Humber River Valley along the Toronto Carrying Place Trail\, one of the most historically important Indigenous trading routes in North America. \nInspired by Tom Thomson: North Star\, the En Plein Air Competition provides a lively testimony to the continuing relevancy of outdoor painting. In the spirit of this iconic painter\, we encourage the artists to look beyond the picturesque\, and to provide visual evidence how progressive climate change and growing urbanization/industrialization affect the natural environment. \nFrom the unruly growth of invasive plants to the gradual change of the forest character from Boreal to Carolinian\, the effects of human interference in nature cannot be ignored any longer. Let the 2023 En Plein Air competition become a call for action to preserve the fragile beauty of the natural environment. \nBetween Sunday\, July 30\, and Tuesday\, October 10\, 2023\, any artists who are interested in participating are invited to set up their canvases on the McMichael grounds\, in Kleinburg Village and along the shores of the Humber River.\nSubmitted artworks could use any two-dimensional medium\, such as drawing\, painting\, printmaking or mixed media. \nFinally\, any artwork created within and depicting the Village of Kleinburg will be considered for the special Kleinburg Village Prize. It’s time to get out there and create your masterpiece. Best of luck to all! \nCompetition Process \n\nBetween Sunday\, July 30 and Tuesday\, October 10\, 2023\, artists will be encouraged to work on the McMichael’s grounds. SUMMARY:The Woods Are Burning
DESCRIPTION:The Woods Are Burning\n\nSunday\, October 6\n\n4 to 6:30 pm\nAbout the event\nIn The Woods Are Burning\, novelist and poet Anne Michaels and singer-songwriter David Sereda lead a stellar ensemble to celebrate the life\, art and passion of Tom Thomson. \nOver a century ago\, Thomson’s painting and spirit galvanized his fellow Canadian artists\, many of whom would later become the Group of Seven. Thomson\, the Group of Seven and their contemporaries would change the way we see our country. \nThe Woods are Burning follows Thomson’s journey his childhood singing in the church choir\, wandering the woods and fishing in the bay\, to his years in Toronto with the friends who would become the Group of Seven\, and north to Algonquin Park\, where he finds his true calling as an artist. The intricate weaving of spoken word and songs will show audiences a side of Thomson rarely discussed: joyous\, yearning\, restless\, humble\, light-hearted and very aware of his own mortality. \nAbove all\, The Woods Are Burning strives to interpret and understand the passion which drove Thomson to create paintings that continue to captivate audiences around the world. \nTo attend this event please RSVP below.  \n\n“Tom did not romanticize the northern landscape. He took it in\, as one eats when one is starving\, or drinks when one is parched. In the last years of his short life\, each sketch was a draining of the glass. He could not have known he had no time left\, but he painted as if he knew.” – text from “The Woods Are Burning” by Anne Michaels \n\n“These songs are responses to Tom the man\, the guy who loved fishing\, who lived to paint but hated talking about painting\, who loved singing. He was made into both hero and martyr and controversy hangs over his puzzling death: this also pumps up the legend status. But here’s the true mystery to me: how did Tom Thomson paint those brilliant works in the span of five years?” – David Sereda \nThe ensemble features readings by Anne Michaels\, and music by David Sereda (piano and vocals)\, Keira McArthur (cello and vocals)\, Sandra Swannell (violin and vocals)\, Terry Young (mandolin and vocals) and Tyler Wagler (bass and vocals). \nThis two-act performance begins in front of the Thomson Shack (weather permitting) and\, as the autumn evening falls\, continues for the second act in Gallery 8. \nTravelling from downtown Toronto?\nHop on the Art Bus!\nLearn moreUnfortunately the RSVP list for this event is full. \nWalk-in seats will be offered on the day of the event subject to availability. ×
