Monter une exposition me semblait la solution idéale. Je ne prétends pas que cette sélection est « le fin du fin»\, loin de là. Choisies parmi les quelque 6500 œuvres dans la collection\, ces 200 peintures ne représentent que la partie visible de l’iceberg. Cela dit\, ce sont celles qui m’ont interpellé lors de ma première visite dans les réserves. D’une grille coulissante à l’autre\, les peintures que j’ai choisies ont amorcé un dialogue\, se regroupant naturellement et dictant en quelque sorte l’accrochage. – Ian Dejardin

Cette exposition explore les nombreuses significations et interprétations artistiques des inuksuit (le pluriel d’inukshuk) de l’île de Baffin\, y compris des dessins\, estampes\, sculptures et plus de soixante photographies provenant du riche fonds des Archives Norman E. Below are details of the first event in this series. \nJoin the McMichael and Elders Jim Dumont and Shelley Charles\, and Lynn Short from Humber College as they unveil the location of a new Ceremonial Garden. Ojibway Elder Garry Sault from the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation will also be here to share his knowledge through ceremony and storytelling revolving around the Indigenous presence and use of the land on which the McMichael is situated. \n \nSnowshoe Hike\nMeeting House\, 1 and 2:45 pm \nJoin Kortright Centre for Conservation staff on a snowshoe hike to explore the beauty of nature (we will hike without snowshoes if there is not enough snow). Learn to identify some winter plants and find neat animal tracks on the ground\, all while exploring the wonderful sights and sounds that nature has to offer. \nFeel free to explore the nature touch table where you will find real furs\, skulls and bones for everyone to touch\, examine and learn about. \nCeremony and Talk\nMeeting House\, 1:45pm \nJoin Elders Shelley Charles and Garry Sault for an Indigenous ceremony\, followed by storytelling revolving around the Indigenous presence and use of the land on which the McMichael is situated. \niPad Workshops\nMeeting House\, 1 and 2:45 pm \nTake part in a fun artmaking activity within the gallery spaces. DESCRIPTION:Digital Photography 2-Day Mini Camp\nAges 13 – 15 \n \nJoin photographer Bryan Weiss for a breakdown in digital cameras and picture-taking techniques. Those enrolled in this session will learn how a camera works\, and how to think more purposefully when taking photos.  The class will cover exposure\, focusing\, composition\, lighting\, and how to use the different functions built into a digital camera. This Master Class encourages participants to paint directly from nature and interpret photographic references. \nAfter graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD University) in 1992\, David McEown spent his last two years off campus\, pursuing independent studies at the Algoma School of Landscape Arts based in the remote wilderness of Northern Ontario. \nFor his body of work completed in this Lake Superior region— an area steeped in Indigenous culture and Canadian landscape painting history—David was awarded The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 1994 and again in 1999. \nAlso in 1999\, David was elected as a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour\, where he served as a director from 2002 to 2007. \nDavid’s work has received national and international awards\, and he has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most accomplished and travelled landscape watercolourists. His most prestigious award came in 2005 with the A.J. Casson Medal from the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour.\npublished in numerous magazines. \nPlease note: A half-hour lunch break is included. Our instructor is an experienced educator and will adapt his teaching style to any skill level for his students.\nProgram Description\nWorking with professional female and male models\, Andrew will guide participants through the basics with simple yet effective exercises that will help them create a drawing or painting of the human figure. He will conduct demonstrations in various media styles with running commentary on the process. Elements of proportion and the connectivity of all elements of the human form will be explored as participants progress to effective uses of line\, dramatic light\, shadow and shading\, and tonal values. Andrew will guide participants along their unique path of creative expression in the medium of their choice. Previous experience using acrylic or pastels is recommended for this class.\nProgram Description\nThose who love to draw will delight in this new\, advanced workshop. Participants will use real life objects as the subjects for their drawings\, with a shadow box and controlled lighting. You will be encouraged to take an unhurried\, contemplative approach to plan your painting. Artists will create a full value drawing and work out composition problems. Participants will be mentored as they determine the level of detail required to transmute the drawing into pastel. Under the guidance of the master pastelist\, you will experience the wonders of interpreting colour into greyscale in this exciting workshop! \nClick here for suggested materials list \nAbout the Artist\nRenowned Barrie-based artist and teacher Margaret Ferraro has exhibited throughout Canada and the United States. Her most illustrious accolades include exhibitions with the Pastel Society of America at the National Art Club in New York City\, and the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada outside Montreal. In 2009\, Ferraro published her first book\, A Time to Dance\, and was named a master pastelist by the Pastel Artists of Canada.  In her work\, Ferraro continuously moves between landscape\, figural and floral subjects\, using a layering technique that incorporates a combination of charcoal\, ink\, acrylic paint and pastels. Macfarlane’s best-selling Newfoundland family memoir\, The Danger Tree\, was greeted with international acclaim. His most recent novel\, The Figures of Beauty\, won the Bressani Literary Prize. \nAbout Douglas Cameron  \nDouglas Cameron\, two-time Juno nominee\, is a musician and a composer\, has performed throughout Canada for over four decades.  As a composer for television his credits include shows with Showtime\, HGTV\, Bravo\, CBC\, Treehouse and HBO. \nAbout Mark LaForme \nMark LaForme is a Status Indian and a member of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation 30 km south of Hamilton. He currently serves as the Director of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Department of Consultation and Accommodation\, a department the Chief and Council tasked him with establishing in January 2015. \nBorn and raised in Buffalo\, New York\, Mark spent most of his time on his First Nation in New Credit\, in particular after the age of 14.  After high school\, Mark enlisted in the United States Marine Corps\, in which he has served from 1979 until 1982 when he received his honorable discharge at the enlisted rank of Corporal.  \n

Philadelphia Museum of Art: The Louise and Walter Arensberg Collection. \nSunday\, November 18 at 2 pm\nIn 1903\, David Milne arrived in New York City to make his way as an artist. By the time he left in 1916\, Modernism had taken hold in Manhattan\, with the 1905 opening of Alfred Stieglitz’s first gallery\, and continuing with the revelations brought on by the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art\, also known as the Armory Show. \nThis talk\, presented by Jessica Todd Smith\, the Susan Gray Detweiler Curator of American Art and Manager of the Center for American Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, will explore some of the extraordinary social\, cultural\, technological\, and aesthetic revolutions that began to unfold during this period and examine the formative experiences that helped Milne develop his unique artistic vision.  \nAbout Jessica Todd Smith\nJessica Todd Smith is the Susan Gray Detweiler Curator of American Art and Manager of the Center for American Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
