Artist Margaret Ferraro will demonstrate the underpainting process step-by-step\, guiding students through the entire process while incorporating students’ personal choices.  \nClick here for suggested materials list \nAbout the Artist\nBarrie-based artist and teacher Margaret Ferraro has exhibited throughout Canada and the United States. She has exhibited with the Pastel Society of America at the National Art Club in New York City\, and the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada outside Montreal. In 2009\, Ferraro published her first book\, A Time to Dance\, and was named a master pastelist by the Pastel Artists of Canada.  In her work\, Ferraro continuously moves between landscape\, figural and floral subjects\, using a layering technique that incorporates a combination of charcoal\, ink\, acrylic paint and pastels. This Masterclass encourages participants to paint directly from nature and interpret photographic references. \nClick here for suggested materials list \n  \nAbout the Artist\nAfter graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD University) in 1992\, David McEown spent his last two years off campus\, pursuing independent studies at the Algoma School of Landscape Arts based in the remote wilderness of Northern Ontario.\nFor his body of work completed in this Lake Superior region— an area steeped in Indigenous culture and Canadian landscape painting history—David was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 1994 and 1999. David was elected as a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour in 1999\, where he served as a director from 2002 to 2007.\nDavid’s work has received national and international awards. He has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most accomplished and travelled landscape watercolourists. His most prestigious award came in 2005 with the A.J. DESCRIPTION: En Pleir Air Competition\nCall for artists\nSupported by the Kleinburg BIA and Ontario Plein Air Society\nCompetition Dates: August 24 & 25\, 2019\nApplication Deadline: Thursday\, August 15\, 2019 by 5 pm\nContest Description\nThe McMichael is inviting artists to participate in the special installment of the McMichael En Plein Air Competition celebrating the legacy of the Humber River\, that in 2019 observes the 20th anniversary of its designation as Canadian Heritage River. Taking advantage of the gallery’s grounds\, the picturesque village of Kleinburg\, and the adjacent Humber River Valley\, artists are invited to respond to the natural and cultural heritage of the river in two medium categories: \n\nAcrylic/oil on canvas or panel\nWorks on paper\n\nAwards and Exhibition\nUp to three artists from each category will be named First\, Second\, and Third Prize winners through a jury comprised of the gallery’s curators\, educators\, and associate community artists. \nA special Young Artist Award will be given at this year’s competition within the 18-25 age category. \nA special First Choice Award will be given by the jury\, and a People’s Choice Award will encourage visitors to participate and to choose their favourite work by casting their ballots in each category. Artists/participants will be encouraged to compete for the Kleinburg Village Urban Scene Prize. \nAll of the awarded works will be on view in the McMichael’s Creative Learning Gallery in the Fall 2019. \nArtists are responsible for art supplies used during the competitions\, such as materials and easels. \n \nGeneral Information\nThe artworks produced during the competition will belong to the artists. (Credit Image: © Louie Palu for National Geographic)\, Louie Palu’s work was supported by funding from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, National Geographic Magazine and Pulitzer Center.\nProgram Description \nLouie Palu\, a Canadian documentary photographer and filmmaker known for his coverage of social and political issues\, will lead a tour of his most recent photographic project in the Arctic. For the last three years\, on assignment with National Geographic\, Palu has investigated the vestigial legacies of the Cold War and current military activities in this extreme northern environment. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. He is a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and Harry Ransom Center Research Fellow. Palu has covered conflict in Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Mexico and Ukraine. His work is held in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Art and Museum of Fine Arts Boston. \nPalu’s work has been published worldwide and has been featured on the BBC\, and in Der Spiegel\, El Pais\, La Republica and The New York Times. His photographs and films have been exhibited in numerous museums and festivals including at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and Munich Documentary Film Festival. This presentation by exhibition curator Nancy Campbell will position his career in relation to other Inuit art innovators. \nItee Pootoogook (1951– 2014)\, After Midnight And The Stars Are Shining\, 2011\, coloured pencil and graphite on black paper\, 50.1 × 65 cm\, Gift from the Christopher Bredt and Jamie Cameron Collection\, McMichael Canadian Art Collection.\nAbout Louie Palu\nLouie Palu (B. 1968\, Toronto) is a documentary photographer and filmmaker whose work has examined socio-political issues such as human rights and war for 27 years. He is a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and Harry Ransom Center Research Fellow. Palu has covered conflict in Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Mexico and Ukraine. His work is held in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Art and Museum of Fine Arts Boston. \nPalu’s work has been published worldwide and has been featured on the BBC\, and in Der Spiegel\, El Pais\, La Republica and The New York Times. His photographs and films have been exhibited in numerous museums and festivals including at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and Munich Documentary Film Festival. The planting activities will be facilitated by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority team. \nItinerary\n11am\nIndigenous Traditional Ceremony led by Elder Shelley Charles\nJohn Elder Shelley Charles from the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation for both a water and planting ceremony at the site of the new ceremonial garden.  The ceremony will be followed by community planting facilitated by the TRCA. \n12pm\nOutdoor interpretive hikes led by Maya-waasige\nDuring this leisurely hike\, Maya-waasige\, aka John Keeshig from Chippewas of Nawsh Unceded First Nation\, will share Indigenous knowledge and stories related to the Humber River habitat. \n2pm\nDrum circle and Food Sharing ceremony\nThe drum circle and ceremony will be led by Niiganikwe (Chastity Jenner) and students from Kikendassogamig First Nation Elementary School located in Neyaashiingmiing\, Ontario.

A keen observer and an insightful writer\, Crowe’s performance will offer an afternoon of reflection and sheer musical beauty that she will share with her close musician friends: Danny Greenspoon and Tony Duggan-Smith. \nThis concert is part of the East Coast Songwriter Series. \nAbout the artist\nBorn and raised in Nova Scotia\, Susan Crowe is a two-time Juno-nominated singer-songwriter and in 2009 she was named the CFMAs English Songwriter of the Year. She’s a past Music Nova Scotia Female Artist of the Year and has been nominated for both East Coast and West Coast Music Awards. In his early days\, Houle attended Sandy Bay Residential School and\, like many Indigenous children\, experienced abuse there. At its heart\, the exhibition features a selection of works from Houle’s Sandy Bay Residential School series (2009)\, a suite of 24 oilstick drawings made by the artist as he recollected these childhood terrors. Histories also includes Houle’s magnificent self-portrait Blue Thunder (2011)\, an unfurling testament to the artist’s courage and resilience\, and Muhnedobe uhyahyuk (Where the gods are present) (1989)\, a group of four large canvases that express the artist’s redemptive connection to the land and sky of Manitoba. \n  \nAbout the artist \nRobert Houle is a painter\, writer and educator and is a member of Sandy Bay First Nation in Manitoba. He studied painting and drawing at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg\, Austria. His work is held in collections throughout Canada and in several international institutions. Houle has received the Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts (2015)\, the Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship\, and the Toronto Arts Award. RSVP required. \nAbout the event\nSaulteaux artist Robert Houle and McMichael Chief Curator Sarah Milroy will engage in conversation about the artist’s personal experience in the residential school system\, the politics of cultural suppression and the resilience of the Indigenous community in the face of adversity. They will be joined by Deborah Chansonneuve\, who brings over two decades experience working with residential school survivors and their families. Feeling a deep affinity for Robert’s art forged over many years\, Chansonneuve will help to frame his experience in the context of individual and collective resistance. \nRead more about the exhibition\, Robert Houle: Histories. \n\nThe conversation will be followed by guitarist David DeLeary’s performance inspired directly by Robert Houle’s art and will take place in the exhibition space. DeLeary is an Ojibwe from the Walpole Island First Nation Reserve and an innovative composer\, producer and performer. Combining a solid background in contemporary pop music\, intertribal music\, computerized sound design and classical composition\, David’s own work brings all these sensibilities to projects ranging from alternative rock productions to theatrical sound design and television scoring.
