The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is pleased to host\u00a0Fran\u00e7oise<\/em> Sullivan<\/em>, an exhibition celebrating the work of Quebec avant-garde artist Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan (b. 1923, Montreal).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This retrospective exhibition highlights the key role of artist Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan in the history of modern and contemporary art in Quebec. The exhibition, which includes over 50 works of art, will feature a diverse mix of painting, sculpture, video, costume and archival materials. It is a chance for visitors to discover or rediscover an artist whose major impact on Quebec and Canadian culture deserves to be more fully recognized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to presenting the artist\u2019s diverse and multidisciplinary practice, the exhibition offers an in-depth exploration of some of the milestones in her career. The various styles and approaches adopted by Sullivan over the years are contextualized with the help of archival documents.<\/span><\/p>\n

This exhibition, organized and circulated by the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al, is curated by Mark Lanct\u00f4t. The Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al is a provincial Crown corporation subsidized by the Minist\u00e8re de la Culture et des Communications du Qu\u00e9bec. The national tour of the exhibition\u00a0Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan<\/em>\u00a0has been made\u00a0possible in part by the Government of Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n

About\u00a0<\/em>Fran\u00e7oise\u00a0Sullivan<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Born in Montreal in 1923, Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan studied at Montreal\u2019s \u00c9cole des beaux-arts in the 1940s, during which time she and a circle of artist friends headed by Paul-\u00c9mile Borduas established the movement known as \u201cLes Automatistes.\u201d A co-signatory of the group\u2019s Refus global manifesto, she contributed a seminal essay on contemporary dance, \u201cLa Danse et l\u2019espoir\u201d (Dance and Hope). An accomplished painter, dancer and choreographer, she spent the years from 1945 to 1947 in New York studying modern dance under Franziska Boas, among others. Shortly after returning to Montreal, she created Danse dans la neige (Dance in the Snow) (1948), which marked a defining moment in her artistic career. In the 1960s, she turned her attention to sculpture, working notably with steel and Plexiglas. She made her first trips to Greece and Italy in the 1970s, and, as a member of the V\u00e9hicule Art artist-run centre, Sullivan experimented with performative and \u201cimmaterial\u201d approaches associated with conceptual art. The 1980s marked a return to painting, with matierist tondos and later figurative works inspired by ancient mythology. During the second half of the 1990s, she embarked on a lengthy exploration of abstract painting, a passion she continues to pursue today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan taught at Concordia University\u2019s Faculty of Fine Arts from 1977 to 2009. Her works have been shown in Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Japan. She has received the Prix Paul-\u00c9mile Borduas and the Order of Canada and was named a knight of the Order of Quebec. Retrospectives of her work have been mounted by the Mus\u00e9e des beaux-arts de Montr\u00e9al and the Mus\u00e9e national des beaux-arts du Qu\u00e9bec. In 2005, Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan won the Governor General\u2019s Award in the Visual and Media Arts, and in 2008, the Gershon Iskowitz Prize.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan (n\u00e9e \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al en 1923) a toujours su s\u2019exprimer par le biais d\u2019activit\u00e9s vari\u00e9es allant de la danse \u00e0 la peinture, en passant par la sculpture, l\u2019art conceptuel et l\u2019\u00e9criture. En effet, en se consacrant \u00e0 l\u2019exploration des sources de la nature humaine, Sullivan a continuellement remis en question ses assises esth\u00e9tiques et a particip\u00e9 aux mouvements d\u2019avant-garde qui ont jalonn\u00e9 le Qu\u00e9bec depuis 70 ans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette exposition r\u00e9trospective souligne la contribution majeure de l\u2019artiste Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art moderne et contemporain du Qu\u00e9bec. Elle offre aux visiteurs l\u2019occasion de revoir ou de d\u00e9couvrir une artiste dont l\u2019impact sur la culture qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise et canadienne demeure peut-\u00eatre m\u00e9connu.<\/span><\/p>\n

En plus de rendre compte de la pratique diverse et pluridisciplinaire de l\u2019artiste, l\u2019exposition examine en profondeur les moments-cl\u00e9s de son parcours, tout en mettant en contexte, \u00e0 l\u2019aide de documents d\u2019archives, les diff\u00e9rents styles et approches qu\u2019elle a adopt\u00e9s au cours de sa carri\u00e8re.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sur Fran\u00e7oise\u00a0Sullivan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

N\u00e9e \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al en 1923, Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan, pendant ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole des beaux-arts de Montr\u00e9al au cours des ann\u00e9es 1940, formera, en compagnie d\u2019artistes qui gravitent autour de Paul-\u00c9mile Borduas, le groupe des Automatistes. Cosignataire du manifeste\u00a0Refus global<\/em>, publi\u00e9 en 1948, elle contribue \u00e0 ce recueil par un texte fondateur pour la danse contemporaine, \u00ab La Danse et l\u2019espoir \u00bb. En effet, peintre, mais aussi danseuse et chor\u00e9graphe, elle s\u2019installe de 1945 \u00e0 1947 \u00e0 New York o\u00f9 elle \u00e9tudie la danse moderne aupr\u00e8s de Franziska Boas, entre autres. Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan a enseign\u00e9 \u00e0 la Facult\u00e9 des beaux-arts de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Concordia de 1977 \u00e0 2009. Ses \u0153uvres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 expos\u00e9es au Canada, aux \u00c9tats-Unis, en France, en Italie, en Belgique, en Allemagne, au Danemark ainsi qu\u2019au Japon. Elle est r\u00e9cipiendaire du prix Paul-\u00c9mile-Borduas, de l\u2019Ordre du Canada et est Chevali\u00e8re de l\u2019Ordre du Qu\u00e9bec. Son travail a fait l\u2019objet de r\u00e9trospectives au Mus\u00e9e des beaux-arts de Montr\u00e9al et au Mus\u00e9e national des beaux-arts du Qu\u00e9bec. En 2005, elle remportait le Prix du Gouverneur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral en arts visuels et en 2008, le prix\u00a0Gershon Iskowitz.<\/span><\/p>\n
