present <em>Stan Douglas: Tales of Empire<\/em>, a focused survey of the acclaimed Vancouver-based artist\u2019s career. For over four decades, Douglas has been recognized as one of Canada\u2019s most important contemporary artists, with a significant international reputation across Europe, the United States, and beyond.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Tales of Empire<\/em>\u00a0presents bodies of work by Douglas that examine various colonization efforts globally, over time\u2014an enduring theme that shapes much of his work. Since the 1980s, he has created technically ambitious works that explore the complexities of history, collective memory, and the lasting imprint of colonialism. Through innovative uses of both analog and digital media, Douglas restages pivotal historical moments\u2014often at cultural, political, or social tipping points\u2014blurring the boundaries between documentary and fiction, cinema and visual art.<\/p>\n<p>Douglas has been featured at the\u00a0<em>Venice Biennale<\/em>\u00a0five times, most recently in 2022 when he represented Canada with the exhibition\u00a0<em>2011 \u2260 1848<\/em>\u00a0and the video installation\u00a0<em>ISDN<\/em>. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at major institutions worldwide, including the\u00a0<em>Centre Pompidou<\/em>,\u00a0<em>MoMA<\/em>, and the\u00a0<em>National Gallery of Canada<\/em>\u00a0and is held in leading museum collections across North America and Europe. Recent projects include a permanent public commission at\u00a0<em>New York\u2019s Moynihan Train Hall<\/em>\u00a0(2021) and the recent survey\u00a0<em>Stan Douglas: Ghostlight\u00a0<\/em>at Bard College\u2019s Hessel Museum of Art in 2025. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the\u00a0<em>Audain Prize for Visual Art<\/em>\u00a0(2019); the\u00a0<em>Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography<\/em>\u00a0(2016); the third annual\u00a0<em>Scotiabank Photography Award<\/em>\u00a0(2013); and the\u00a0<em>Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography, New York<\/em>\u00a0(2012). In 2021, Douglas was knighted as a\u00a0<em>Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres<\/em>\u00a0by the French Minister of Culture, and in 2023 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Simon Fraser University, Greater Vancouver. In 2024 he was appointed to the Order of Canada.
