He considered himself an amateur photographer, and recognized the medium as its own distinct art form. Johnston&rsquo;s large collection of photographs represented a variety of subject matter, though the emphasis, as in his paintings, was on the Canadian landscape. Featuring photographs sourced from both public and private collections, this exhibition represents research into the role of photography in Johnston\u2019s oeuvre. Through a selection of Johnston\u2019s photographs of the Canadian outdoors, some juxtaposed with related paintings by the artist, the offered insight into Johnston\u2019s working method, how he perceived the world around him through photographs he took, and how his paintings were influenced by photography.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.
