data-contrast=\"auto\">Sarah Milroy:\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0like to\u00a0talk for\u00a0a bit about The Enemy of All Mankind, your\u00a0new series of large-scale photographs that also\u00a0deals\u00a0with themes of\u00a0colonialism.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0based on the eighteenth-century playwright John\u00a0Gay\u2019s little-known work\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Polly<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which he wrote after\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Beggar\u2019s Opera<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0Preparing for this interview, I confess I went down a rabbit hole of\u00a0British satirical cartooning in the eighteenth century\u2014artists like\u00a0Thomas Rowlandson and James Gillray. This was truly a golden age of\u00a0satire. How did you find your way to John Gay? Of course,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0sort of\u00a0the\u00a0British literary equivalent of those cartoonists.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stan Douglas:\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0always been a fan of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0Threepenny\u00a0Opera\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by Bertolt Brecht and\u00a0Elisabeth Hauptmann, which was based on Gay\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Beggar\u2019s Opera<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0But I came upon\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Polly\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">while doing research on pirates, and in a book on\u00a0the early economy of the Atlantic called\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Many-Headed Hydra\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">there\u00a0is a detailed discussion of various pirate cultures and a chapter on John\u00a0Gay\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Polly<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. And\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0like, What the hell is John Gay\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Polly?<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SM:\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0back up a bit. Why were you interested in pirates?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SD:\u00a0Freedom, I suppose, by way of the condition of the Maroon. A Maroon\u00a0community is one composed of people who had escaped slavery and\u00a0claimed an intentional, positive freedom for themselves. We presume\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0free in the \u201cfree world,\u201d but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a passive\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">freedom from\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rather\u00a0than an active\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">freedom to<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Maroons were free in a way that we really\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0ever be. In seventeenth-century Brazil, the jungle was dotted with\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mocambos<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, villages created by Maroons. Some of these were organized\u00a0into a republic called the Quilombo dos Palmares, which\u00a0established\u00a0a\u00a0representative democracy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SM:\u00a0Were pirates usually Maroons?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SD:\u00a0They were, in effect. They had often been part of a mutiny and taken\u00a0control of a ship. The communities aboard these ships were\u00a0very diverse.\u00a0During the enclosures in eighteenth-century England, common land\u00a0was seized from farmers and others who lived off the land\u2014they were\u00a0displaced. All kinds of people became vagrants and ended up in jail or\u00a0debtors\u2019 prison. The government had created a criminal class they could\u00a0imprison, then exploit to staff the Royal Navy. As these ships cycled\u00a0around the Atlantic, some sailors would escape and new ones would be\u00a0picked up along the way, so you might have a mix of French, Spanish,\u00a0English, and Irish speakers as well as Indigenous and Black people as\u00a0crews on the ships. When sailors mutinied against dictatorial officers,\u00a0they\u00a0established\u00a0an economy of equal shares, and the pirate ships\u00a0became, in effect,\u00a0Maroon\u00a0communities on the water.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SM:\u00a0What stood out for you about Gay\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Polly?<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SD:\u00a0When I finally got a copy of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Polly<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it was just insane\u2014the story depicts\u00a0race and gender as performative and satirizes upper-class financial\u00a0chicanery, and it was written in 1729. The play was controversial and was\u00a0banned in Gay\u2019s time. But it was serialized, so it became\u00a0very popular,\u00a0nonetheless. But Gay never saw it produced on stage in his lifetime\u00a0because the\u00a0powers that be\u00a0thought it\u00a0might\u2019ve\u00a0been satirizing them\u2014which of course it was. In Gay\u2019s play,\u00a0Macheath\u00a0(aka Mack the Knife\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0Threepenny\u00a0Opera<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) is sent to the West Indies as an indentured\u00a0labourer. Upon arrival, he escapes and masquerades as a Black man,\u00a0Morano, in blackface, which I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0want to do.\u00a0So\u00a0I just flipped it\u00a0around and made\u00a0Macheath\u00a0a Black man masquerading as white in the\u00a0UK and then lets his hair grow out when he gets to the Caribbean.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SM:\u00a0When you look at what John Gay had his finger on in the eighteenth\u00a0century, and you think about presenting The Enemy of All Mankind\u00a0today, I wonder\u2014is this a perfect tale for our times?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SD:\u00a0Maybe the\u00a0idea of rogue nations that\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0exist to the extreme\u00a0degree that they do now. The phrase \u201cenemy of all mankind\u201d comes\u00a0from a legal doctrine in which pirates are identified as not under any\u00a0kind of flag, so\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0kind of\u00a0free\u00a0game for anybody. Any nation can\u00a0attack and board their ships.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
