This past summer, we were thrilled to welcome the Toronto-based conceptual artist Iris H\u00e4ussler as the Tom Thomson Shack Artist-in-Residence. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During her residency, H\u00e4ussler created\u00a0<\/span>Divided Heavens<\/span><\/i>, an imaginative, deeply atmospheric transformation of the historic Thomson Shack. The installation\u00a0was\u00a0built around the invented lives of German-born\u00a0twins\u00a0Kurt and Carl Pfister, separated after the Second World War and unaware of each other\u2019s existence. Though divided by fate, the brothers share an uncanny, lifelong connection rooted in their fascination with\u2014and compassion for\u2014migratory birds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inside the shack, H\u00e4ussler brought their intertwined stories to life through engraved mirrors and glass, delicate paper bird mobiles, illuminated globes mapping migration routes, and carefully crafted personal artifacts. Together, these elements formed a quiet, contemplative environment that reflected on migration, vulnerability, memory, and our responsibility to the natural world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

H\u00e4ussler\u2019s\u00a0longstanding advocacy for bird safety forms an essential part of the project. She works actively with\u00a0FLAP Canada (Fatal Light Awareness Program), the country\u2019s leading organization addressing bird\u00a0collisions with buildings. Each year, an estimated\u00a025 million migratory birds\u00a0die in Canada due to window strikes\u2014an invisible crisis that continues to escalate without coordinated conservation efforts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her time at the McMichael also opened the door to a new collaboration with the documentary filmmaker David Hartman. As part of our ongoing film series spotlighting contemporary Canadian artists, Hartman followed H\u00e4ussler in her studio as she developed <\/span>Divided Heavens<\/span><\/i>, and\u00a0later on\u00a0the streets of downtown Toronto, where she volunteers with FLAP Canada to\u00a0locate\u00a0and report bird fatalities in the urban core.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The resulting short film offers a vivid portrait of\u00a0H\u00e4ussler\u2019s\u00a0practice\u2014one in which storytelling, material experimentation, and environmental advocacy converge with remarkable sensitivity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
