Koffman\u2019s essay<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW87608201 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW87608201 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW87608201 BCX0\">\u00ab\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW87608201 BCX0\">Painting Jewish Life in Canada<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW87608201 BCX0\">\u00ab\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW87608201 BCX0\">:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW87608201 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m\u00a0not sure how much William\u00a0Kurelek\u00a0knew about Canadian Jewish\u00a0history in 1973, when he first got the idea to paint Jewish Canada. I can\u00a0imagine, though, the conversations he had with his collaborators, Abe\u00a0Arnold, the Winnipeg-based historian of Canadian Jewry and a founder\u00a0of the Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada, and his friend Abe\u00a0Schwartz, an engineer by trade and a fellow Winnipegger. Together, over\u00a0the course of two days the following winter, they offered\u00a0Kurelek\u00a0a kind\u00a0of immersive tutorial. Arnold brought\u00a0Kurelek\u00a0a raft of archival\u00a0photographs of Jewish communities across Canada, and the two must\u00a0have riffed on them, sketching scenes of Jewish life. The two Abes also\u00a0furnished\u00a0Kurelek\u00a0with details about Jewish religious traditions,\u00a0immigrant experiences, Jewish occupational niches, the tribulations\u00a0of antisemitism, and the rich history of Jewish community building\u00a0. . . .<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pay attention to\u00a0Kurelek\u2019s\u00a0gaze\u2014to the aspects of Jews and\u00a0Judaism that he saw and chose to highlight. As a Catholic, he had a\u00a0particularly Christian understanding of\u00a0Jewishness. He describes Mary,\u00a0for example, as\u00a0\u201ca Jewish maiden\u201d\u00a0in the introduction to the 1976 book, and\u00a0he has a penchant for quoting Hebrew scripture. If the conclusion of\u00a0Kurelek\u2019s\u00a0own introduction to his paintings gives us a clue as to his deeper\u00a0motivations for the paintings (beyond his act of homage to Isaacs), his\u00a0painting Jewish history might very well have been to serve as expiation\u00a0of shame for Christian Europe\u2019s long hatred and ultimately genocidal\u00a0persecution of Jews.\u00a0\u201cAnother reason I had for doing the painting,\u201d\u00a0writes\u00a0Kurelek, was\u00a0\u201cto do my bit in undoing some of the injustices Jews have\u00a0suffered at the hands of Christians.\u201d\u00a0Indeed, half of his\u00a0short introduction\u00a0is devoted to antisemitism\u2014Christian religious anti-Judaism, Nazi\u00a0antisemitism, and Canadian-born anti-Jewish animus. These paintings,\u00a0he writes, were intended to help fellow Canadians\u00a0\u201cat least show respect\u00a0for and interest in another people\u2019s traditions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
