Join us for the launch of From Water to Water: A Land Acknowledgement<\/em>, a new collaborative publication by Anishinaabe artist and scholar Bonnie Devine and photographer Robert Burley.<\/p>\n

For thousands of years, the Toronto Carrying Place Trail has connected the Great Lakes with Georgian Bay through a network of rivers, lakes, and portage routes. Drawing on historical research, mapping, storytelling, watercolour, drawing, and photography, Devine and Burley trace the Trail across the landscape \u2014 revealing how these waterways have shaped movement, trade, culture, and settlement over millennia, and investigating where vestiges of these ancient routes remain visible today. The book invites readers to reconsider familiar places through a lens that foregrounds Indigenous histories, ecological interconnectedness, and the enduring significance of water as both a physical and cultural force.<\/p>\n

Bonnie Devine<\/h2>\n <\/div>\n \n
\n

Bonnie Devine<\/strong> is an Anishinaabe visual artist, writer, and scholar from Serpent River First Nation whose work emerges from the storytelling traditions and cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Working across drawing, installation, sculpture, and writing, her practice explores Indigenous knowledge, historical geography, and relationships to land and water. Devine\u2019s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, the Smithsonian Institution\u2019s National Museum of the American Indian, and the Venice Biennale. A recipient of the Governor General\u2019s Award in Visual and Media Arts and numerous other honours, she is recognized as one of Canada\u2019s leading Indigenous artists and thinkers. She is also the founding chair of the Indigenous Visual Culture Program at OCAD University. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n

Robert Burley<\/h2>\n <\/div>\n \n
\n

Robert Burley<\/strong> is one of Canada\u2019s most respected photographers, known for his long-term investigations of landscape, architecture, urban change, and the relationship between human activity and the natural environment. For more than four decades, his work has examined how places are shaped, remembered, and transformed over time. Burley\u2019s photographs have been exhibited and collected internationally by institutions including the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the George Eastman Museum. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he has published extensively on subjects ranging from Toronto\u2019s ravine system and Great Lakes landscapes to industrial heritage and environmental change. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n

Sarah Milroy<\/h2>\n <\/div>\n \n

Sarah Milroy<\/strong> is the Frances and Tim Price Executive Director and Chief Curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, Canada\u2019s only museum devoted exclusively to Canadian and Indigenous art. Previously, Milroy served as editor \/ publisher of Canadian Art<\/em> magazine and as lead art critic of the Globe and Mail<\/em>.
