FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 17, 2014, KLEINBURG ON—The McMichael Canadian Art Collection has released four new publications highlighting several of the most original, highly acclaimed exhibitions to be displayed at the gallery in the past year: You Are Here: Kim Dorland and the Return to Painting (October 26, 2013 to January 5, 2014); Karine Giboulo’s Small Strange World(s) (October 12, 2013 to January 26, 2014); Morrice and Lyman in the Company of Matisse (October 10, 2014 to January 4, 2015); and Eyes on Quebec: Treasures from the Andrée Rhéaume Fitzhenry and Robert Fitzhenry Collection (November 8, 2014 to February 1, 2015).
Exploring both historical and contemporary Canadian art, these catalogues add new depth to the exhibitions through essays, interviews, photographs, and artwork reproductions, building upon the ideas that were explored in the gallery and offering fresh insight into the lives and practices of the artists.
“It is part of the McMichael mission to inspire learning and promote scholarship both within the gallery and outside of its walls,” said Dr. Victoria Dickenson, Executive Director and CEO of the McMichael. “These new publications are part of the McMichael’s commitment to sharing information and celebrating Canadian artists who have shaped or are shaping our country’s rich cultural landscape.”
The books Kim Dorland and Karine Giboulo take up the themes in contemporary Canadian art that were explored at the McMichael last fall. Kim Dorland, which includes an interview with the artist as well as more than 120 full-colour artwork reproductions, considers Dorland’s place within the tradition of Canadian landscape painting. Named Artist of the Year by The Globe and Mail in 2013 following his show at the McMichael, Dorland has since mounted successful solo exhibitions at Angell Gallery and Contemporary Calgary. The Globe recently selected the Kim Dorland catalogue as one of ten art books to watch for this holiday season.
Karine Giboulo, who is currently exhibiting at Angell Gallery, was named Artist of the Year by La Presse following her retrospective at the McMichael. The catalogue of her work includes an essay on the absurd by Sharona Adamowicz-Clements, McMichael Assistant Curator, Collections.
The gallery also co-published the English-language catalogue for the exhibition Morrice and Lyman in the Company of Matisse, on display at the McMichael until January 4, 2015. The 256-page publication includes essays by some of Canada’s foremost art historians, including John O’Brian and François-Marc Gagnon, both of whom recently delivered public lectures at the gallery as part of the McMichael Speaker Series. The catalogue offers a look at the intersecting paths of two Montreal expatriate artists, J.W. Morrice and John Lyman, and the celebrated French master, Henri Matisse.
The McMichael’s newest exhibition, Eyes on Quebec: Treasures from the Andrée Rhéaume Fitzhenry and Robert Fitzhenry Collection, is being commemorated with a catalogue that celebrates the vision of two passionate collectors and their promised gift of fifty important works of Canadian art to the gallery. Essays by exhibition co-curators Sharona Adamowicz-Clements and Chris Finn focus on two of the collection’s most significant artists: Jean Paul Lemieux and Clarence Gagnon. Visitors can see forty-three of the works from the Fitzhenry gift on display at the McMichael until February 1, 2015.
These publications can be purchased at the McMichael Gallery Shop or online. Visit mcmichael.com for more information.
