Planting Seeds of Change

June 10, 2019, Kleinburg, ON – On Sunday, June 23, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection’s Creative Learning Team and volunteers will host a community planting of the gallery’s new Indigenous Garden. The planting will commence with a ceremony led by Elder Shelley Charles, Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, followed by an Outdoor Interpretive Hike led by Maya-waasige. The celebration will close with a Drum Circle and Food Sharing Ceremony led by Niiganikwe and students from the Kikendassogamig First Nation Elementary School.

Where

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is located at 10365 Islington Avenue, north of Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan. The celebration will take place in the McMichael Sculpture Garden.

Why

To celebrate the natural, historic and cultural heritage of the Humber River Valley. The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is located on the original lands of the Ojibwe Anishinaabe People. It is uniquely situated along the Carrying Place Trail which historically provided an integral connection for Aboriginal people between Ontario’s Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe-Georgian Bay Region. As an institution, the McMichael recognizes the importance of acknowledging the original territories of the Ojibwe Anishinaabe First Nations people.

About the McMichael Canadian Art Collection

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is an agency of the Government of Ontario and acknowledges the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, and the McMichael Canadian Art Foundation. It is the foremost venue in the country showcasing the Group of Seven and their contemporaries. In addition to touring exhibitions, its permanent collection consists of over 6,500 artworks by Canadian artists, including paintings by the Group of Seven and their contemporaries, as well as First Nations, Métis and Inuit artists. The gallery is located on 100 acres of northern landscape and hiking trails at 10365 Islington Avenue, Kleinburg, north of Major Mackenzie Drive in the City of Vaughan.
