August 11, 2010 Kleinburg, ON — The McMichael Canadian Art Collection, in conjunction with PowerStream and OSRAM SYLVANIA, put the spotlight on the public gallery’s new Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting system at a workshop held Wednesday morning at the facility. The art gallery is now using the energy and money saving LED – the first art institution in North America to use this type of lighting in gallery spaces.
Recent advancements in LED lighting technology have enabled it to be used effectively in any application, including the illumination of some of the most important works of art in Canada. In a joint project with LED manufacturer OSRAM SYLVANIA and the utility company PowerStream, the McMichael has replaced most of its incandescent lamps with LED lamps. This conversion to LED lighting is reducing the cost of electricity for lighting the galleries by at least sixty percent.
The “Taking the LEED® on LEDs” workshop was held at the gallery to showcase the recently installed LED lamps and to educate other businesses on how the technology can be used in a commercial environment. Facility and energy managers representing companies from across the GTA were in attendance to learn more about LED lighting as well as other related energy-efficient strategies and solutions.
The workshop focused on sustainable LED lighting technologies. It included presentations from Milan Bolkovic (EVP Renewable Generation & Conservation, PowerStream), Stefanie Josephson (Sales Development Manager, OSRAM SYLVANIA) and Katerina Atanassova (Chief Curator, McMichael Canadian Art Collection).
PowerStream, the second largest municipally-owned electricity distribution company in Ontario, delivers power to more than 325,000 customers residing or owning a business in communities located immediately north of Toronto and in Central Ontario. OSRAM SYLVANIA is a leader in lighting solutions that feature innovative design and energy saving technology. The company sells lighting products for homes, businesses and vehicles.
