FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 31, 2015, KLEINBURG ON—The McMichael Concert Series, in partnership with JAZZ.FM91, returns this fall with an exciting lineup of performances, celebrating great Canadian music amidst the gallery’s world-class collection and spectacular grounds. The concerts will take place on Sunday afternoons in the picturesque Woodland Gallery overlooking the Humber River Valley – and will be hosted by well-known musician, writer, and radio personality, Jaymz Bee.

“Bringing music and dance to the Woodland Gallery is one of the most successful artistic ventures in recent years,” said Anna Stanisz, Associate Director of Creative Learning and Programs at McMichael. “This magical setting filled with Norval Morrisseau’s paintings encourages and inspires creativity, allowing the performers to forge a unique connection with the audience. This artistic synergy cannot be replicated in any other jazz venue.”

On Sunday, October 4, the series opens with a performance by JUNO Award-winning trumpeter and composer David Buchbinder and his stellar quartet. Together they will play original jazz that perfectly balances Buchbinder’s complex, dynamic compositions with the ensemble’s fiery, masterful improvisations. The audience will be taken on a musical journey, as jazz and world music influences are crafted into a unique, celebratory sound.

The harmonizing sounds of jazz continue with the next performance on Sunday, November 1, by beloved Toronto musician Genevieve Marentette. After returning to Toronto following an eight-year stay in Asia, Marentette was featured in the JAZZ.FM91 Cabaret series Tribute to Peggy Lee and has released a six-song EP, titled after her nickname “Gigi”. Marentette and her quartet will perform a full range of jazz, from early style swing and blues, Brazilian and French, to modern interpretations of popular music gems form the 1960s to the 1980s.

A frequent McMichael performer, Tony Quarrington and Friends returns once again to conclude the series. Quarrington is best known for his compositions including the Group of Seven Suite and Emily Songs, inspired by the McMichael’s art collections. He will perform new original compositions that reflect on Aboriginal and Métis history and offer a more lighthearted repertoire, with special guest Don Francks on vocal.

Explore the McMichael’s exhibitions, stroll through the grounds, and enjoy lunch prior to the 3 pm performance at AURA by Cashew & Clive in the Grand Hall. Reservations are recommended. Please call 905.893.1121 ext. 2262.
