April 26, 2016, Kleinburg, ON – Ontario is supporting arts and cultural events in Vaughan that will attract tourists, boost the local economy and create jobs.

Through the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund, the province is helping the McMichael Canadian Art Collection develop and promote the 50th anniversary of the gallery with an investment of $200,000.00 (with a fixed repayment of 40%).

The anniversary will include several programs and events centred on four major exhibitions:

  • 50/50/50 (June 4, 2016 to January 8, 2017)
  • Higher States: Lawren Harris and his American Contemporaries (February 4, 2017 to September 4, 2017)
  • The Group of Seven Guitar Project (summer 2017)
  • Passion over Reason: Tom Thomson and Joyce Wieland (summer/fall 2017)

Investing in cultural tourism supports the government’s economic plan for Ontario. The four-part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario’s history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.

“Arts and cultural organizations such as the McMichael enrich our life and stimulate our local economy. The support from the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund will help the McMichael develop and promote their upcoming programs which will give locals and visitors alike new ways to experience culture right here in our own backyard.”

-Steven Del Duca, M.P.P., Vaughan

“Ontario is home to many renowned events and exhibits that showcase our province’s vibrant culture and I’m proud that our government supports them through the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund. Our continued investment will help create jobs, build local economies and attract visitors from around the world to discover Ontario.”

-Michael Coteau, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport

“The investment that OCAF has made in our 50th anniversary season will enhance our ability to attract increased visitation of new and diverse audiences. We’re very excited about sharing four exceptional exhibitions that celebrate some of the best Canadian art with local, national and international audiences, which will solidify the McMichael’s presence on the national stage as Canada’s art gallery.”
