The McMichael Canadian Art Collection ranks among Canada’s top public galleries in size and significance. The McMichael’s permanent collection consists of over 6,500 artworks by Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, their contemporaries, and First Nations, Métis, Inuit and contemporary artists who have contributed to the development of Canadian art. The gallery welcomes on average more than 110,000 visitors annually. In addition to school groups and the general public, the gallery hosts weddings, corporate, social and fundraising events.
The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is currently seeking bilingual (French/English) On-call Educators for summer public tours and through the 2025 academic school year. As part of a team of professional educators and interpreters, McMichael on-call Educators actively participate in delivering tour programs at the McMichael gallery for the public at all levels.
Job requirements include: BA or enrolment in BA program in art history, studio art, education or another relevant discipline, with excellent public presentation and communication skills. Knowledge of Canadian and Aboriginal art, experience teaching in French and working with diverse or special needs audience are assets. Priority is given to candidates who are BIPOC with the above passion for art and teaching.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Deliver established educational tours and programs to school, private, adult and corporate groups consistent with McMichael Canadian Art Collection practices in English and French.
- Tours and programs are delivered both on-site and off-site in person as outreach programs (mileage reimbursement for off site tours).
- Supervise students and help with studio preparation, through the lunch hour as required.
- Studio preparation and support with tour/studio material organization, and independent learning related to exhibitions.
- Attend and participate in department and gallery meeting, training, and lecture sessions.
Rate of pay is $20.00 /hour, increasing to $21.00 and $22.00 after working a set amount of hours.

Over 6,500 works of art representing the Art of Canada comprise the permanent collection, and the gallery welcomes on average more than 115,000 visitors annually. We are currently recruiting existing part-time or new staff to fill the need of a Weekend Sales Representative who will support and report to the Senior Manager, Sales & Community Engagement to provide tours of rental space at the gallery and to positively promote McMichael’s event spaces. This position will also provide lead customer service support on weekends for the Art Bus initiative that will provide transportation to the McMichael from downtown Toronto from mid-June to mid-October.
Hours of work from June 24 -October 15 will be on Saturday and Sundays from 9:30 am-4:00 pm. From November to April, work will be on either Saturday or Sundays, based on the schedule of appointments.
Qualifications:
- A talent for interacting with people and providing a welcoming environment
- Superior verbal and customer service presentation skills
- Knowledge about and passion for the McMichael Canadian Art Collection
- Sales experience an asset
- Knowledge of second language (particularly French) is an asset
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Greet guests for preset appointments within the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 on select weekends, from May through December.
- Tour guests through different function sites (Grand Hall, Founder’s Lounge, Wedding Hill, Gallery 8, Education space) and answer questions.
- Review wedding package with price, floor plans, vendor information, bonus membership, corporate information, sample contract.
- Prepare and provide meeting summary reports/emails
- Provide customer service and logistics support for Art Bus travellers starting at 9:30 am (bus departs Toronto at 10:30 am). Serve as a liaison for Art Bus riders, answering any questions and ensuring visitors catch the return bus departing the Gallery at 3:30 pm (June 24-October 15)
- Check emails and take calls regarding any guest issues with pick up locations, in contact with bus company to troubleshoot any pick up problems
Rate of pay: $16-17.00 per hour
