Summer Camp 2025
ArtVenture camps provide a classic all-Canadian art camp experience with a mix of outdoor activities in the Humber River Valley, creative instruction in our fully resourced art studios, and a world-famous art collection.

Led by top young art instructors from the GTA, each camp includes time in the museum, outdoor activities, artmaking in the studio and a visit by a special guest each week to enhance the theme of each session. Campers will have the opportunity to get creative and and get outside while making new friends.
Camp Format
Each summer camp class consists of up to 17-18 campers, one instructor, and one assistant working in a designated studio space with controlled access to washrooms.
Registration is required for each session. Transportation is not provided.
Parents/guardians are responsible for packing their children’s lunches and snacks and ensuring that they are all nut- and sesame-free.

Extended Care Options are available for the week. Before and/or After Care offer one hour of cooperative games and small art activities to help campers wake up each morning and wind down at the end of the day, while giving parents/caregivers a bit of extra time to make it to work and back.

ArtVenture Summer Camp
In each thematic session, campers are divided into age-appropriate groups and engage in projects designed for their age, social, and developmental needs.

Activities will focus on playful explorations and experimentations with various art mediums and tools while nurturing campers’ visual literacy through storytelling and guided art viewing. Fun outdoor games, role-playing, and show-and-tell activities will build co-operative spirit and encourage friendships among the campers. | Activities will focus on the development of campers’ artmaking skills through fun projects and social activities. While exploring and discussing the art on view at the gallery, campers will focus on refining their personal artistic interests and gain confidence by sharing with their peers during discussions and explorative outdoor learning sessions. | Activities for older campers will focus on trying new and challenging art techniques and methods, and using advanced materials and natural resources to nurture campers’ artistic abilities. Through in-gallery explorations, campers will be encouraged to think creatively and critically about the art of Canada. Expert instructors will balance artistic learning with fun and games that give campers the chance to socialize and enjoy the summer against the backdrop of the Humber River Valley. | ||

Mixed-Media MadnessThis session introduces campers to the wide and marvelous world of art materials and techniques while discovering art in two- and three-dimensions in the gallery. Combined with fun outdoor adventures, this program offers campers the opportunity to experiment with all different types of art materials and push the boundaries of their imaginations. |

Outdoor StudioIn this session perfect for nature and animal lovers, the focus is on nurturing an appreciation of the natural world and tending to the environment in our own backyard. From painting en plein air to making art with objects found in nature, campers will polish their observational skills and fine-tune their creativity while getting up close to the biodiversity of the Humber River Valley. |

Super SculptureDrawing on the McMichael’s substantial sculpture collection, this session immerses campers in the world of three-dimensional forms and textures. Working with a wide range of sculpting materials, campers will try their hands at fun and challenging 3-D compositions while getting to know how the sculpture in the gallery spaces and on the grounds were made. |

Painting ChallengeDid you know that paint can be poured, sprayed, scratched, sponged, and so much more?! Starting with a close look at the work of great Canadian painters currently on view at the gallery, this session invites campers to explore the wonderful versatility of this medium by taking on a variety of inventive painting challenges to discover their own personal painting style. |

Colour LabThis session explores the art and science of colour and light across the full spectrum of the rainbow. Studio activities introduce campers to colour combinations and the importance of colour hue, value, and saturation in evoking the expressive power of colour. |

Nature Art TeamInspired by the biodiversity of the Humber River Valley, campers explore a variety of local ecosystems, learn about the causes of climate change, and artistically explore how creativity and environmental stewardship can create a more resilient planet. |

Brush with ArtThis session focuses on the alchemy that happens when hand meets brush. Campers will fine-tune their brushstroke technique by experimenting with various painting medium from ink to acrylic to oil paint. Through close looking at a selection of painting in the gallery, campers will discover the amazing versatility of paint throughout history and respond with their own compositions that capture the colours of the summer’s end. |

Get Wild!Inspired by the diversity of exhibitions in the gallery, campers will be encouraged to use all their senses to seek inspiration from the world around them and to express their creativity through art projects that use nature as both a medium and a canvas. |

*Please note that children who are 4 years old must be able to work independently during camp. If the camp is not suitable for the child, they may be removed from the camp with a 50% administrative fee charged to the participant.

This play–based program is designed to provide a first art camp experience to young artists-to-be. Storytelling activities, interactive explorations of exhibitions, and tours of the McMichael’s grounds will provide inspiration essential to this program’s hands-on art making projects. To ensure that our participants are comfortable with this full-day program, the instructors will make sure to adapt the program to the young children’s energy levels, and to incorporate enjoyable games and social breaks
