Since its foundational gift from Robert and Signe McMichael, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection has been committed to celebrating the stories of private collectors. Transforming Spirit tells the story of Jamie Cameron and Christopher Bredt’s passion for the art of Canada’s Northwest Coast, showcasing works by 27 celebrated contemporary artists of the region. This exhibition offered viewers an opportunity to enjoy the range of aesthetic qualities inherent in the work of indigenous artists of the Northwest Coast, as well as the distinct artistic styles of different First Nations communities of the region. Among the works featured in the exhibition were masks, bentwood boxes, rattles, blankets and works on paper. A publication was produced in conjunction with this exhibition, featuring new photography of the 49 extraordinary objects and works on paper and including a essays by the exhibition curator, Chris Finn, and by specialist in Northwest Coast art, Gary Wyatt.
