General Information & Ticketing

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection will be closed as of December 14, 2020 until further notice while York Region is in lockdown. We will reopen when it is deemed safe to do so.

When the Gallery reopens, hours are expected to be:
Monday to Wednesday: Grounds Only
Thursday to Sunday: Members & General Public, 10 am to 5 pm
Holiday Mondays: Members & General Public, 10 am to 5 pm

Yes, the McMichael will issue a refund for any pre-booked ticket between the dates of December 14, 2020 and January 10, 2021. Someone from our team will contact you in the coming dates. Thank you for your patience.

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a rescheduling option at this time as we don’t know exactly what date we’ll be able to reopen. Thank you for your patience and please check back on our website, social media or sign up for our newsletter for the most up-to-date information.

The safety and health of our visitors, volunteers and staff remain our top priority. Before you visit the McMichael, please be aware of the following:

  • Please refrain from visiting the McMichael if you feel unwell or suspect that you have come into contact with an individual showing symptoms of COVID-19. Click here for more information from the Government of Ontario’s self-assessment page.
  • All visitors will be asked to respond to simple screening questions upon entering the building according to the new provincial public health framework.
  • All visitors over 5 years old are required to wear a mask indoors (medical / other conditions exempt).
  • All frontline staff members will be wearing masks.
  • All tickets, including member tickets, must be purchased or reserved in advance using our timed ticketing system.
  • Please practice physical distancing and remain a minimum of two metres (6 ft.) away from other visitors at all times.
  • All visitors must sanitize their hands upon entering the Gallery. Sanitation Stations are located throughout the building.
  • We kindly request that visitors follow all posted safety guidelines, directional signs and the instructions of McMichael staff members.
  • McMichael guides and staff will be limiting the number of visitors allowed into spaces, including all galleries, the Founders’ Lounge, Gallery Shop and elevators. We thank you for your patience and understanding if you are asked to wait.
  • At this time, the coat room is currently in use, however the lockers are not available at this time.
  • Limited-menu dining options may be available on-site.
  • All visitors will be asked to respond to simple screening questions upon entering the building according to the new provincial public health framework.
  • New signage will help visitors navigate the unidirectional travel through all gallery spaces.
  • Timed ticketing has been implemented for all visitors, including McMichael members, to manage capacity and visitor flow.
  • McMichael staff will be sanitizing public spaces on an enhanced cleaning schedule.
  • Visitors are encouraged to use a number of new hand sanitation stations positioned around the Gallery.
  • Frontline staff will be wearing personal protective equipment and masks as they interact with visitors.
  • Transactions and payments will be touchless/contactless. Payment by debit or credit strongly preferred.
  • All soft furnishings have been removed from public spaces for sanitary purposes.
  • All drinking fountains will be closed until further notice. Personal water bottles may be consumed outside of Gallery spaces.

Yes. All visitors over 5 are required to wear a mask inside enclosed public spaces in York Region, including the McMichael. For more on the Region’s mandatory mask policy, please click here. Children under 5 are exempt, as are those who cannot wear a face covering because of a medical or other condition. Thank you in advance for helping keep our community safe.

  • Timed tickets are required of everyone visiting the McMichael, including members, until further notice.
  • A limited number of walk-up tickets may be available day-of but are not guaranteed.
  • Tickets are booked online on our website in half-hour entry timeslots. You can use a computer, tablet or smartphone to book your ticket.
  • You may bring a printed copy of your ticket or show it on a smartphone once you arrive at the Gallery where you will be scanned in.
  • You will be asked to wait in line before being admitted to the Gallery during your timeslot; visitors will be let in in small groups. We thank you in advance for your patience.
  • Once you have entered the galleries during your entry timeslot, you may stay as long as you like. There is no time limit on your visit.

We strongly encourage all visitors to leave valuables and large personal items at home or in their car as these are not permitted in the galleries. At this time, the coat room is in use with limited capacity, however the lockers are not available.

The McMichael Cafe will be closed as of Monday, December 14, 2020 until further notice. Please check back for further updates.

The Gallery Shop will close as of Monday, December 14, 2020 until further notice, along with the rest of the gallery. The e-shop will remain open for online shopping.

A number of exhibitions have been extended due to the closure of the gallery spaces. For more information, including updated closing dates, please visit our exhibitions page.

** Please note that all guest / reciprocal passes will be suspended for the duration of the Gallery’s closure beginning December 14, 2020 until further notice. Please check back for updates.

Yes. When booking a complimentary or reciprocal ticket, select “McMichael Guest Pass” as your ticket type. Upon arrival at the gallery, please present your pass or reciprocal membership card (plus ID).

* All coupons are currently suspended from December 14 for a minimum of 28 days while York Region is in lockdown and the Gallery is closed.

At this time, we are only accepting the Attractions Ontario coupon. The discount offered through this coupon is not available online, but it can be redeemed by calling the gallery at 905.893.1121, or sending us an email at info@mcmichael.com.

Yes, frontline workers receive free parking ($7 value) to visit the grounds and trails seven days a week. This offer applies to residents of Ontario who are doctors, nurses, hospital employees, paramedics, police officers, firefighters, grocery store workers, mass transit employees, retirement and long-term care workers, social services, emergency shelter staff, sanitation and waste management employees, and others. Please show work ID at the parking booth when visiting the McMichael. On behalf of everyone at the McMichael, thank you for your hard work and dedication to keeping our community safe. Offer valid through March 31, 2021.

Yes, Indigenous people receive free admission with the presentation of a status card.

Parking & Grounds

  • Yes, when the Gallery is closed (as of Monday, December 14, 2020 until further notice), the grounds and trails will still be open seven days a week but are not being maintained during the closure.
  • The Parking Lot will be open from 10 am to 5 pm daily. Please buzz at the security gate for admission to the lot. After-hours parking is strictly prohibited. Parking along En Plein Air Drive, a fire route, is not permitted and vehicles are subject to ticketing by the city.
  • Unfortunately, the outdoor public washrooms will not be open. We appreciate your understanding.
  • Picnic tables are available for use on the grounds, please do not litter and please clean up after your party.

At this time, outdoor groups are limited to 5 people and wearing masks outdoors is strongly recommended by the province. For more information on group visits to the McMichael grounds, please contact Angela Poletto.

Membership

For our Members, we will be monitoring your renewal dates and will advise of any changes once the Gallery reopens.

Once the McMichael reopens, Members will be welcome to bring guests using their Guest Passes. Member Plus holders are also welcome to bring a guest. When booking tickets online, simply select McMichael Guest Pass for your guest. Guest Passes must be surrendered at the front desk upon arrival.

Programs & Events

All currently scheduled virtual public programs, including online art classes, virtual tours and ArtVenture Winter Club will continue as planned in an online format. Please contact programs@mcmichael.com with any questions. View upcoming events.

No events or weddings may take place while the York Region is in lockdown (December 14, 202o until further notice).

Yes, you are welcome to bring an attendant with you for accessibility reasons and are entitled to a 2-for-1 discount. Simply enter the code ACCESS50 when purchasing admission tickets online for yourself and your attendant.
