Bring the McMichael to your classroom with Art2Go

McMichael educators come to your school, leading hands-on, curriculum-connected programs that bring Canadian art directly to your students. Each 2.5-hour program combines structured discussion with creative artmaking, and is designed to support Ontario curriculum expectations at each grade level.

The Shape of The Land
Mixed Media Studio 

Kindergarten

Through guided viewing of works from the McMichael’s collection, students explore the features of southern and Arctic landscapes through two playful artmaking activities. While identifying and describing specific landforms, students are introduced to the elements of art and how to apply them in their own compositions.

Landscape
Mixed Media Studio 

Grades 1 — 3

Starting with a close look at nature and a discussion of how different cultures understand landscape, this mixed media studio emphasizes individual response and emotional connection to the land. Students begin with a compositional study before exploring a range of materials—collage, pastel, plasticine, and watercolour—while learning about painting perspective, focal points, and working with a nature-inspired palette.

Arctic Tales
Mixed Media Studio 

Grades 1 — 3

Arctic Tales introduces students to Inuit storytelling traditions, art, and life in the Canadian Arctic through an engaging mixed-media studio program. 

Developed in collaboration with Inuk artist Angela Aula and Innu storyteller and drummer Silaqqi Aalpi Kumurluk, the program invites students to experience traditional stories shared by both artists and explore the cultural knowledge and meaning they carry. Drawing inspiration from two stories rooted in northern themes, students will respond creatively through movement and the creation of their own mixed-media artwork.

Storytellers & Image-Makers
Mixed Media Studio 

Grades 4 — 6

Developed in collaboration with Ojibwe artist, designer, and educator Don Chretien—whose practice is inspired by the natural world and the visual storytelling of Norval Morrisseau and the Anishinaabe School of Painters—this studio invites students to look at the natural world through art, images, and objects from nature. Students respond creatively using a variety of materials and techniques, culminating in a mixed-media artwork that reflects their personal relationship to the environment and the stories within it.

Landscape Painting Studio 

Grades 4 — 8

Starting with a close look at nature and discussion of various cultural concepts of landscape, this watercolour painting studio incorporates contemporary approaches to the genre emphasizing individual reaction and emotional connection to the land. Students start from an initial compositional study and move to a final painting, exploring colour gradation and space and learning about painting perspective, identifying a focal point, and working with a palette inspired by nature.

Wampum Pledge
Mixed Media Studio

Grades 6 — 10

Developed in collaboration with Manon Sioui and Dominic Ste-Marie, Wendat artists and storytellers from Wendake, Québec, Wampum Pledge invites students to explore traditional Huron-Wendat teachings related to environmental stewardship and community well-being. 

Through a collaborative mixed-media artmaking process, students will explore the importance of peace, gratitude, reciprocity, and interconnectedness while reflecting on their own responsibilities to their communities and the natural world.

Envisioning Environmental Futures
Mixed Media Studio 

Grades 7 — 12

How can art and creativity help us imagine new responses to a changing climate? Developed in collaboration with contemporary artist Rajni Perera, Envisioning Environmental Futures invites students to explore the relationship between people, culture, and the environment while considering the challenges of climate change. 

Inspired by Perera’s practice, which explores cultural hybridity, identity, and imagined futures, students will work collaboratively to consider our relationship with the natural world and use mixed-media artmaking to envision creative responses to the environmental crisis and a more hopeful future.

Mapping Landscapes
Watercolour Painting Studio

Grades 9 — 12

Developed in collaboration with John Hartman—an Ontario-based artist known for his layered landscape paintings—this watercolour studio invites students to investigate the notion of a cultural landscape and to create their own personal responses to the land while investigating its geography and history.

Program
Information

Duration & Cost All Art2Go programs are 2.5 hours in length and $20 per student.
Group Size The minimum group size for all Art2Go programs is 20 students.
Supervision Teachers are required to stay with the group for the duration of the program and assist the McMichael educator.
Program Notes Each program begins with a short digital introduction to the McMichael.

Booking
Policies

Payment Policy Payment is due upon program delivery. The McMichael accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, direct deposit, or cheques (payable to McMichael Canadian Art Collection). Groups booking programs with fewer than the minimum number of students will be charged for the minimum amount.
Financial Assistance The McMichael recognizes that each school’s situation is unique. Please let us know if your school is an EPAN, model or performance plus school or is facing financial hardship and we can work with you to find a solution.
Cancellation Policy Cancellations or program modifications must be received in writing two weeks prior to the scheduled programming. Cancellations made within two weeks of the scheduled programming will be charged 50% of the contracted rate.
Rescheduling Policy Rescheduling within two weeks of your scheduled programming will result in a 10% administration fee, calculated on the total cost of the booking.
Program Modifications Changes to the number of participating students must be received in writing at least 30 days before your program. Changes made within two weeks may only be adjusted by up to 10% of the original number booked. For example: if you booked for 50 students but 25 attend, you will be charged for 45.
