Connect your students to the McMichael’s collection from anywhere!

Each one-hour program guides students through the process of looking at, analyzing, and interpreting works from the McMichael’s permanent collection, while exploring different artistic styles and how they are made.

Through the Window  

Kindergarten — Grade 3

Young learners enjoy getting a different view of the world as seen through the artist’s window in a selection of artworks in the McMichael’s permanent collection. Interactive activities introduce the elements of design including colour, line, and shape and collaborative storytelling engages students’ literacy skills. A final artmaking activity encourages students’ creative responses and self-expression.

Style Explorations:
The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson  

Grades 1 — 8

Explore some of the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson’s most iconic paintings from the McMichael’s collection during this interactive program. Students are introduced to the distinctive styles of each member of the Group and learn about how the Group and Thomson’s legacies continue to inspire artists more than 100 years later.

Arctic Style Explorations:
Norval Morrisseau and Other Anishinaabe Artists  

Grades 9 — 12

Explore the artwork of Norval Morrisseau and other artists working in the style of the Anishinaabe School of Painting during this interactive program. Discover how Morrisseau employs the elements and principles of design and how his iconic style influenced other artists such as Carl Ray and Blake Debassige.

Indigenous Art at the McMichael  

Grades 9 — 12

This virtual overview of Indigenous art at the McMichael highlights the cultural and stylistic diversity of Indigenous art in Canada and how the challenges experienced by Indigenous communities—including Canadian policies of cultural assimilation, the residential school system, and forced displacement—have been addressed by Indigenous artists past and present. The discussion will encourage students to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural resilience of Indigenous communities and illuminate the role of artists in advocating for civil and environmental rights.

100 Years Later:
Discovering the Group of Seven 

Grades 9 — 12

More than one hundred years after its formation, the legacy of the Group of Seven and the work of Tom Thomson continue to influence Canadian art and artists. Students will discover some of the most iconic paintings produced by these groundbreaking artists and engage in debate about how their views of Canada can be understood and interpreted in the context of today. 

This interactive virtual experience is based on images from the exhibitions A Like Vision: The Group of Seven at 100 and Tom Thomson: North Star.

Information

Platform The McMichael uses Zoom for virtual programs.

Educators will receive a private link in advance.

If your school board requires a different platform, please note this during the booking process—we are happy to adapt.
Duration & Cost 1-hour program: $10 per student
2-hour program: $16 per student
Group Size The minimum group size for virtual programs is 12 students.
Supervision Teachers are responsible for the management of their students during virtual classrooms and are required to be present for the duration of the program.

Booking
Policies

Payment Policy Payment is due upon program delivery. The McMichael accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, direct deposit, or cheques (payable to McMichael Canadian Art Collection). Groups booking programs with fewer than the minimum number of students will be charged for the minimum amount.
Financial Assistance The McMichael recognizes that each school’s situation is unique. Please let us know if your school is an EPAN, model or performance plus school or is facing financial hardship and we can work with you to find a solution.
Cancellation Policy Cancellations or program modifications must be received in writing two weeks prior to the scheduled programming. Cancellations made within two weeks of the scheduled programming will be charged 50% of the contracted rate.
Rescheduling Policy Rescheduling within two weeks of your scheduled programming will result in a 10% administration fee, calculated on the total cost of the booking.
Program Modifications Changes to the number of participating students must be received in writing at least 30 days before your program. Changes made within two weeks may only be adjusted by up to 10% of the original number booked. For example: if you booked for 50 students but 25 attend, you will be charged for 45.
