YRDSB 2023 Student exhibition
In 2023, the McMichael worked with 113 students from four schools across the York Region District School Board. From January through March students met once a week, working with McMichael Educators, Volunteers and artist Don Chretien.
For the final session, the McMichael team travelled to participating schools where students led their peers through a Signature Studio program 317 students from 12 classes participated in the final session of the program.
Artwork created by participants during the program can be seen below. The project encouraged students to look closely at the artwork of contemporary artist Rajni Perera and reflect on her visions of imagined futures. Students were asked to create a device that could help humanity thrive in a future or place facing environmental challenges. Some students have included an artist’s statement to accompany their work, guiding the viewer to a greater understanding of the process behind their creation.
The problem is that bad guys attacks people. My device is a device that can suck up few of the air around you and you can put a bottle of poison in the device and then it combines the poison and air together then the device blows the two combined things and makes the bad guy paralyzed. My device works by pushing the button on top of the device. You don’t need to charge it.
The problem is world hunger, if you’re going hungry or don’t have access to food this zipper-portal will make food for you.
My device makes food for you.
How my device solves the problem is if you trace a line in the air a zipper-portal will appear, open it and a spread of food will be inside waiting for you.
This device is really useful because in most parts of the world a lot of people go hungry and or don’t have enough money to buy food. These people would have access to food now.
My device is a self tie waterproof shoes/boots for people that don’t know how to tie shoes or it is raining and don’t want shoes to get wet. You just have to press a button and it ties itself how it works is there is sensor, and you press the button and yeah, the waterproof part is just rubber and other waterproof things.
My Art is a shield, if you bang on it, firefly’s will appear and surrounded you to make light and protect you. The problem is that it is dark in the forest and wild creatures lurking around can attack you. You can bang it with anything, your hand or a stick.
For my artist statement I’ve created an umbrella. The problem is the acid rain, the rain can cause very annoying problems that can harm you or someone, so i created my device, it’s an umbrella that can protect you, and others which can help save people from the rain.
The device can be useful when it comes to rain, and i’ve also added wings that can fly, but it’s only temporary so you may fall off any time!
The problem is that some people are colour blind and never saw any colour. It helps colour blind people see colours. But anyone can wear it. It can show people colours and you can see the future and past. You press buttons to see the past, future, and colours.
The money Cannon helps people within people’s needs, it also helps people to buy foods and meals it always has a purpose. Its only for need by homeless people who don’t have enough money, this device could help homeless people make money.
I drew a gas mask that had tubes coming from each end of the mouth then to each end of the box on the head of the mask. The box on the head has a filtration system built in to the box.
How does it work? Well the box on the head has a filtration system like I said which has air going into the filter and through the tubes on the side and into your mask. Why I made this is because my environmental issue is that there is a very high amount of toxins in the air
Some people have died due to snipers. So I made a device called a fire chestplate, the chestplate can light up in the dark and burn stuff down and is also a great protection.How the chestplate helps is when someone tries the shoot you with a sniper. There is also a button in the middle of the chestplate which can make you invisible to escape the sniper. The chestplate also has some spicks to protect you from combat. If your burning stuff down the chestplate will do the trick.
The imaginary object that I simply created in art is a tree launcher, the ammo that is supposed to serve in creating an item to launch which is a sapling, has an infinite supply. The purpose is to launch trees and the purpose of the tree is to clean the carbon dioxide from the air which is apparently what trees absorb, then the trees produce/release oxygen. The trees also increase the number of trees that humans/loggers(job) cut down. Hey! This doesn’t mean it an infinite supply of wood it’s just “renumbering the trees”.
The biggest threat to our earth is pollution. Pollution is caused by burning fossil fuels, carbon dioxide emitted from vehicles and many more. If too much carbon dioxide is emitted into the air It causes holes in our atmosphere which lets in more of the harmful radiation emitted from the sun, global warming which causes ice caps to melt, unusual weather and storms, and many more dangerous things can happen. Therefore, I designed the pollution destroyer. The pollution destroyer will let you select 2 out of 10 things. Then you choose where on earth you want to spawn your black hole. Finally, press the button and the black hole will appear. You can use it unlimited times and has built in grips on the side to make you feel more comfortable.
The reason why I made this is because some people put oil in the water so this device works by you put the device in the water and the water then it will only get the oil and not the water if everyone has it then we would have more fresh water to drink and there will be less oil in the water , the important in my device is that the handle has to touch the land but at the same time the bucket has to touch the water so it will be kinda hard but at the same time it gets the job done.
The reason I made this painting was because I want to stop wars. The name of the painting is ISDPE which stands for interdimensional ship destroyer powder eater. It destroys and eats powder off of firearms ships and destroys the powder then leaves whatever the powder was in. It is attracted the powder it is also bullet proof to infinite calibers, missile and nuke proof so in the sense of a city under attack it can protect citizens without them dying it also can dissolve into infinite ISDPE’S but it still is the same size and status of the original ISDP but if it dissolves into more than 1 trillion ISDPE’S it will self destruct and explode not hurting anyone but when exploding if it touches anything that uses the powder of a firearm it dissolves the powder.
My device is a glove that can help you if you are in the mountains, hunting and it can help in more scenarios outdoors. On the glove, the fingers and palm of the glove have abilities. The pinky is healing, the ring finger is warning that danger is near, the middle finger on the glove is building like formations, the ring finger is tools, the thumb is the fighting tools and in the middle of the hand is a built in phone. These things can help you incase of an emergency.

The problem is the water it is spinning and the hand is making the water spin, the asteroid is making it spin to. The purpose is to help the ocean grow the fruits.
Lately, people have been cutting a lot of trees. My invention is a cloud that flys around the world while dropping tree seeds everywhere! To help the environment, how nice is that? The controller has 4 buttons. The first button is to turn the cloud on. The second button is to turn it off. The third button is to drop the seeds down to plant. The last button is to make it rain after the seeds are dropped.
The problem is the water is polluted and there is no fresh water to drink.My device helps to purify the water to change it into fresh water or you can say drinking water.My device solves this problem by having a water filter located inside of it. The way it works is you unscrew the head and add in the water.Wait for 1 minute then press the button on the head when you press the button the fresh water / drinking water will come out of the eyes. (don’t ask why).
The food people eat is somehow getting dirty. I decided to make some kawaii glasses for people to wear. The glasses check/scan the food that people eat and make sure it’s clean before you eat the food. The hearts in the middle change colour when the get a result. (if the food is clean then the hearts turn green and if the food is dirty then the hearts turn red).
My piece of artwork is called the Orb Of Life. It focuses on habitat loss and deforestation. The Orb Of Life grows plants, trees, and grass around wherever it is placed. You simply place it somewhere and then you pull out one of the flowers sticking out from it to activate it. If you want to stop it pull out another flower. The flowers regrow every time you pull out one. It solves the problem of habitat loss and deforestation by growing new homes for animals and growing trees on places where trees have been cut down. It can also make plants and etc grow in any environment.
My rain hatter, it doesn’t let acid rain touch your skin or you, the item is made out of a strong metal, acid can’t melt it. There is also a button inside the hat, it can make the metal part longer or shorter, it depends on the rain. It’s metal but it feels like thin paper, The acid sometimes heats up, so there is a cold and hot button.
This is my art. It is not the best but it represents something. My grandma always tells me to go outside but I always stay inside watching YouTube, until, one day I noticed that my friend is outside playing in the park. So I went outside and had so much fun. So what are you waiting for? Let’s go outside!
This painting is called “The Space Vase” created on February 14, 2023. The problem shown in my painting is overpopulation. To fix this problem, we created these “spaceships” that travel at the speed of light from one planet to another. My device carries humans from one planet to another with efficiency. It does not run on gas. Instead it runs on wind, kind of like a kite that can travel large distances without a rope

This is about world hunger. So you eat a blox fruit then you get super powers and you’ll never be hungry! Dough fruit makes a giant fried dough that explodes.
When it comes to heat, the earth is warming up at an alarming rate. Also if there was more volcanic eruptions, one day the earth might be covered in lava. Another problem is things are getting more expensive. My first solution is it can be used by firefighters to battle fires and rescue those who got trapped in volcanic eruptions. Also if things are getting expensive my piece of technology won’t get expensive. Since the earth is warming up you could use it to keep cool in the heat.

Under the sunset, a little bear was watching the sunset and was holding a balloon in his hand, but he didn’t notice that his glasses fell into the water. It looked around for help, but there was no one around. It was very sad, and it thought about whether to go into the water to get it. But it forgot that it could call firefighters on its cell phone. In this way, the little bear lives by the water bank every day.
My art piece is a fan. The problem is that the air is dirty and people can’t breathe because it is dirty. The fan filters air when you turn on the button and turns dirty air into clean air, It does not require any batteries or charging.
