SUMMARY:Living with Art — McMichael Accessible Program for Adults Living with Exceptionalities
DESCRIPTION:JAN 11 — FEB 22\, 2026 \n \n \n \nThe Living with Art program is a studio-based series of three-hour-long classes developed for young adults (aged 18 and older) living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or other exceptionalities. The program provides an opportunity for the participants to view and create art while socializing in a safe and inclusive environment. The program is offered on scheduled dates for individuals. Organized groups are welcome to book a session for up to 15 partcipants. \n\n\n \n \n READ MORE \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Individual \nRegistration \n \n \n \nJoin us at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in an exploration of art\, nature and artmaking activities which are interactive\, accessible\, and designed to promote enjoyable learning and social skills. These three-hour long workshops will offer young adults (ages 18 and over) living with special needs opportunities to actively explore the connections between art\, nature\, and the world around us. Each unique workshop will have its own theme combining in-gallery art-viewing\, outdoor discovery and studio artmaking. Participants can engage independently or with guardian/caregiver support. All workshops are free of charge\, pre-registration is required through the McMichael. Each workshop will have a link below when the registration is open. \n\n\n \n \n READ MORE \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop\nThemes \n \n \n \n \n \nLens on Landscape\nDuring this workshop we will visit spaces inside the gallery that were part of the McMichaels’ home and explore some landscape paintings. The group will continue outdoors to enjoy a brief walk\, look at and – if weather permits – photograph or sketch the landscapes on the McMichael grounds. Inside the studio\, we will have a short break before creating our own watercolour landscape paintings! \nClay Works\nIn this workshop we will explore sculpture including different ways sculptures are made and the materials artist use to make 3D works for art. We will discover many types of 3D art together. We will start with a walk Outdoors to take a closer look at some of the sculptures located on the gallery/McMichael grounds. Then\, inside the gallery we will continue our exploration of other sculptures. In the Studio\, we will have a short break and then we will make our own 3D art using clay. \nPrints-Prints-Prints\nIn this workshop we explore the Inuit stone cut printmaking method and explore a variety of printmaking techniques. We begin in the Pine Cottage where we can handle objects from the Arctic and learn about printmaking through photos and hands-on activities. Then we head outdoors for a short walk to enjoy the natural setting of the McMichael. Our walk will include (if weather permits) a close-up look at the Inukshuk located on the grounds. Inside the gallery we will explore artwork to see how the natural environment can be a source of inspiration for artmaking. Back in the studio we will create our own individual prints using various tools and materials designed for creative expression. \nThe Shape of Things\nThis workshop will take a closer look at the McMichael’s collection indoors and outdoors. We will begin with a gallery visit which includes interactive art-viewing activities exploring a variety of artistic styles. We will discover how artists use 2D shapes in their artwork to express ideas. We will then take a discovery walk on the McMichael grounds to explore nature and outdoor artwork. Back in the studio participants will use paper and a variety of design tools\, drawing and colouring materials\, to creatively express their ideas in making their own ‘shape’ inspired artwork. \nPaint with Texture\nIn this workshop we will examine how artists express ideas using thick (impasto) paints. Inside the gallery we will begin with a visit to the theatre as a “Behind the Scenes’ look at this room which was a part of the McMichael’s home. We will also handle an artist’s paint box and their tools to examine how some artists expressed their ideas of nature. We will look at some paintings in the gallery spaces and then head outdoors to take a leisurely walk. In the studio\, we will have a short break\, then make art. We will make our own nature-inspired painting using thick paint and a palette knife. \nScratch Painting\nIn this interactive\, hands-on workshop we explore how many artists use colour and dramatic lines in their paintings. We will begin with a walk to the Tom Thomson Shack and a ‘Behind the Scenes’ visit inside. We will learn about the shack and how it had once been Tom Thomson’s home and studio. We then go into the gallery to view and explore a variety of artworks with a focus on line and colour. In the studio we will make our own ‘scratch’ paintings using acrylic paint\, oil pastel and an assortment of inscribing tools. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nParticipation Guidelines\n\nFor young adults\, ages 18 and over\, living with special needs.\nPre-registration is required.\nMaximum number of participants per workshop – 10 (plus caregivers).\nParticipants must be able to engage independently in activities\, or with parent/guardian/caregiver support.\n\nPlease note: This is not a transfer of care program. SUMMARY:Artwell — Accessible Program for Individuals Living with Dementia
DESCRIPTION:JAN 11 — JUNE 7\, 2026 \n \n \n \nThe Artwell program is developed and delivered in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of York Region. Artwell is a series of interactive artmaking programs that supports emotional connections\, encouraging memory recall\, experimentation\, and gentle social interaction among individuals living with dementia. \nThe visual arts and music are recognized as having therapeutic benefits for individuals living with dementia. Viewing and creating art allows participants to focus on their capabilities instead of focusing on what they can no longer achieve. \nThe goal of the program is to reduce isolation and instill a sense of purpose while providing a memorable cultural experience and an opportunity to strengthen bonds between participants and caregivers. \nEach two-hour session is offered monthly. Each session is facilitated by two McMichael Educators and up to two volunteers. Registration is required. \n\n\n \n \n READ MORE \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop\nThemes \n \n \n \n \n \nColour Quest\nThis workshop will explore the joy of using colour in abstract art. Participants will begin by examining different colours and reflecting on how each colour can evoke different memories. We will look at colour in connection with emotion\, place\, and time. Participants will experiment with mixing and distorting imagery using different artmaking techniques. \nBranching Out\nParticipants will explore different natural objects found in the Canadian landscape. We will explore smells\, textures\, shapes\, and colours\, as well as how to incorporate these sensations in artmaking. \nLife Threads\nThis program will explore the connections between different types of fabric\, with a particular focus on texture. Participants will feel\, smell\, and look at different types of fabric and thread while trying to evoke memories. The workshop will culminate in the creation of a colourful print placed on top of a textured background. \nPostcards from Canada\nIn this workshop\, participants will examine vintage postcards. They will look at images\, text\, and personal messages to try to evoke memories of a personal experience. Participants will be encouraged to create a postcard with a personal message if they choose to do so. \nThe Art of Touch\nThis workshop will engage the participants in the art of touch. Participants will use clay to explore different feelings\, temperatures\, and smells. Clay is cathartic in nature\, clay therapy provides creative stimulation\, social interaction and develops fine motor skills. These skills may evoke a memory of some sort – cooking or building something for example. \nSoundscapes\nThis workshop will explore sounds and music. Participants will create a piece of art in direct response to the music they hear. We will try to evoke memories of the people and places that the music reminds them of. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nParticipation Guidelines\n\nFor adults living with dementia and their caregivers.\nPre-registration is required.\nMaximum number of participants per workshop – ten participants (plus caregivers).\nCaregivers must remain present throughout the workshop.\nParking and Gallery Admission are included.\n\nEach caregiver/family will receive a Family Pass to enjoy the McMichael at their leisure on another day of their choice. \nPlease note: This is not a transfer of care program.
