Fresh Air: The Changing Landscape of Canadian Art

Fresh Air brings historical and contemporary artists into conversation around one of Canadian art’s most enduring subjects: the landscape. Iconic early twentieth-century paintings are shown alongside contemporary works in painting, sculpture, photography, and textile — practices that expand the genre to embrace environmental change, Indigenous land relations, and personal memory. Together, they invite visitors to consider landscape not as a fixed subject but as a living one, to which artists across generations have felt compelled to return.

Listen to the Land

Listen to the Land brings together approximately fifty oil sketches by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven with Wave Sounds, a sculptural installation by renowned Anishinaabekwe artist Rebecca Belmore. Drawn from the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the exhibition traces changing artistic responses to the Canadian landscape across more than a century — from the Atlantic coast to the Arctic tundra and the Rocky Mountains.

By bringing landmark works of historical landscape painting into conversation with Belmore’s powerful meditation on land, place, and listening, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how our understanding of the natural world has evolved — and what it means, across time and culture, to truly listen to the land.
