Family Storytelling Tours for March break

About the Tours

From March 11 to 15 the whole family is invited to stop by the McMichael for a Storytelling Circle that explores a different exhibition and theme each day at 11:30 am and 1 pm. Our expert storytellers will regale you with tales of creativity and wonder that will transport you inside the artist’s mind and to the outer reaches of your own imagination.

The Storytelling Circles are approximately 45 minutes in length and are free with gallery admission.

If paintings could talk to each other, what would they say? That is the premise of this wide-ranging exhibition of works from across the breadth of the McMichael’s permanent collection. What do paintings, sculptures and photographs from different times and places have to say to each other? How are they similar? How are they different? Explore the unexpected conversations that arise between artists from all walks of life and spark your own conversation.

Tracing the Shadows
Ghosts of Canoe Lake, New Works by Marcel Dzama

In the spirit of Marcel Dzama’s artistic practice of re-imagining well-known visual materials, this highly interactive storytelling session encourage participants to envision alternative narratives to infuse the gloomiest of McMichael’s paintings with lightness, smile and hope.

Delve into the vibrant world of Anishinaabe stories, symbols and teachings through the iconic paintings of Norval Morrisseau, who has a special relationship to the McMichael. Learn about how these paintings were made and what they have to teach us about the world today.

Earth Treasure Hunt
Cobalt: The Mining Town and the Canadian Imagination and Moridja Kitenge Banza, Topographies

Silver, diamonds, and cobalt are sought after natural resources, leading some nations to rely heavily on their extraction. This practice enriches some nations while destroying others. Through the interpreting artworks on view at the McMichael, this storytelling session explores a timely question: What are the real treasures of the Earth? Are they precious stones and metals? Or is it the people and their cultural legacies?
