The McMichael Canadian Art Collection Announces
The Return of Signature Fundraiser,
the Moonlight Gala, for 2023
May 23, 2023, KLEINBURG, ON – Following a record-breaking success in 2022, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection is pleased to announce the return of the Gallery’s signature annual fundraiser, the Moonlight Gala on Saturday, May 27, 2023. Canadian art’s biggest night under the stars returns to dazzle hundreds of distinguished guests with a memorable evening of dining and dancing under the Canadian sky.
The McMichael’s grounds will transform into a glamorous outdoor soiree, where guests will mingle with artists, art lovers, donors, community leaders, and corporate supporters, all while enjoying captivating performances by leading Canadian musicians. The 2023 Moonlight Gala will reflect the McMichael’s continued commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship.
Emceed by award-winning broadcaster Elvira Caria with a welcome from Steven del Duca, Mayor of the City of Vaughan, guests of the Moonlight Gala will be treated to a culinary extravaganza by The Food Dudes, an interactive gourmet experience by award-winning Indigenous chef David Wolfman, a fine selection of Ontario wines by Stratus Vineyards, Ontario’s first LEED-certified vineyard, and live performances headlined by the Montreal Rhapsody Orchestra.
The Gala’s popular live and online auctions will also return for 2023. This year, the live art auction will offer original works by leading contemporary Canadian artists John Hartman, Rajni Perera, Moridja Kitenge Banza, Winnie Truong, and Margaux Williamson, while the online auction will offer a curated selection of packages including all-Canadian outdoor experiences.
Guests will enjoy exclusive access to the McMichael’s 2023 summer exhibitions: The Uses of Enchantment: Art & Environmentalism and Sandra Meigs: Sublime Rage, which jointly examine and consider the fragile human relationship with the natural world, as well as a last look at the popular Meryl McMaster: Bloodline.
“The McMichael Canadian Art Collection reaffirms Ontario’s reputation as a world-class destination for cultural tourism. Incredible galleries like these are important to our economy and culture, contributing up to $28.5 billion and supporting 290,000 good paying jobs,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “I encourage everyone to attend the Moonlight Gala and support McMichael’s incredible efforts in preserving and exhibiting such an outstanding collection of Canadian art.”
Proceeds from the Moonlight Gala go toward the conservation and exhibition of more than 7,000 works of art in the McMichael’s permanent collection, the development of industry-leading educational programs for children and youth, and the stewardship of the McMichael’s natural landscape and outdoor art.

Generations: The Sobey Family and Canadian Art
Dates: Ongoing through May 23, 2022
Generations: The Sobey Family and Canadian Art tells the story of one family’s visionary engagement with Canadian and Indigenous art, braiding together works by early European newcomers like Cornelius Krieghoff; titans of Canadian 20th century art such as the Group of Seven, Tom Thomson, David Milne and Emily Carr; the Quebec Impressionists, as well as Automatiste painters Jean Paul Riopelle and Paul-Émile Borduas; and works by trail-blazing artists of today, including contemporary Indigenous artists Kent Monkman, Brenda Draney, Brian Jungen and Annie Pootoogook, as well as leading international artist Peter Doig. A recurring theme in the exhibition is the North Atlantic, its role in history as a place of endeavour and of conflict, and its impact on the artistic imagination.
Generations is timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Sobey Art Award, which has had a groundbreaking impact on the visibility and vitality of contemporary artmaking across Canada. This nationally touring exhibition celebrates that milestone, demonstrating the range and depth of the Sobey family’s engagement with Canadian art, and their prescient and visionary leadership in the cultural sector—a gift to Canada like no other.
