Virtual En Plein Air Competition
In the time of social distancing and COVID-19, personal and creative connections to nature have become even more important for health and well-being. The 2020 edition of the McMichael En Plein Air Competition returned as a completely virtual experience. Our annual competition invited artists to create art inspired by the beauty of nature easily accessible from home.
While for the last several years the McMichael’s grounds and the adjacent Humber River Valley have provided inspiration for the competing artists, this year’s virtual edition allowed artists from across Canada and beyond to participate. By the conclusion of the competition, we had received submissions from over 120 artists.
The competition jury panel, which consisted of representatives from the Gallery’s Curatorial Department and the McMichael Volunteer Committee, is pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 McMichael En Plein Air Competition.

It was an absolute pleasure to jury this year’s En Plein Air competition. We had a difficult time selecting winners, as the submissions in each category were of excellent quality. Every artist that applied to the competition demonstrated a high level of technical ability and wonderful creativity. We commend all contestants for their submissions, and extend our congratulations to the prize winners!
