STEPHEN ANDREWS : IMAGES DE GUERRE

Présentée en marge de l’exposition consacrée à David Milne et du centenaire de l’armistice, cette exposition s’articule autour des images de guerre et de prisonniers de guerre de Stephen Andrews et explore notre perception de la guerre à travers ses images. Les œuvres d’Andrews, pour la plupart des dessins à la mine de plomb, interprètent avec finesse les omissions et les interprétations erronées des images de guerre. Une large part de l’exposition est consacrée aux œuvres de 2003 à 2006, qui traitent surtout de la guerre en Irak. Un autre volet présente ses œuvres les plus récentes qui portent sur la crête de Vimy. À l’instar de Milne, dont il est un fervent admirateur, Andrews s’intéresse aux conséquences de la guerre.

DAVID MILNE : UNE PEINTURE MODERNE

Témoignage éloquent d’une carrière qui s’étend sur la première moitié du 20e siècle, l’exposition réunit plus de 90 peintures à l’huile et aquarelles, des photographies et des dessins montrés pour la première fois, ainsi que des objets ramenés d’Europe où Milne était artiste de guerre. « C’est un artiste moderne qui vit dans la mémoire collective et l’un des secrets les mieux gardés du Canada. » – Sarah Milroy, co-commissaire de l’exposition.

Figure Painting

Working with professional female and male models, Andrew will guide participants through the basics with simple yet effective exercises that will help them create a drawing or painting of the human figure. Andrew Sookrah will conduct demonstrations in various media styles with running commentary on the process.

Beats2Borders Videography Workshop

In conjunction with the exhibition …Everything Remains Raw: Photographing Toronto’s Hip Hop Culture from Analogue to Digital, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection is pleased to present the Beats2Bordes Videography Workshop, a unique learning opportunity for youth aged 14 to 18. Led by photojournalist Juan Gomez, the workshop will cover essential videography techniques, including composition, lighting and shooting on location.

Break, Hop & Stomp Family Sunday

Celebrate dance with the famed KeepRockinYou, an artist-based b-girl collective that seeks to inspire and empower young girls. From 12 to 1 pm, join their “cypher practice”, try new moves or just enjoy watching them in action. A special hip hop dance performance will begin at 2 pm.

Full Painting Studio

Instruction will be offered to artists working to refine their offerings in the subject of their choice—landscape, still life, figurative/portraiture, wildlife/pets—and in their individual style, be it realism or varying degrees of abstraction. Special attention will be given to basic drawing techniques, composition, colour, texture, use of materials and effective brushstrokes.

Canada Day Family Sunday

Come celebrate Canada Day at the McMichael! This family day engages the senses through various art workshops related to the exhibitions on view. Take part in the Family Printmaking Challenge happening throughout the day outside of Pine Cottage. Join a Family Tour at 1 pm in the gallery spaces animated by a McMichael docent, and watch a performance by the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band.

Toronto Children’s Chorus Tour Send-Off Concert: Ring of Fire

The Toronto Children's Chorus Chamber Choir will return to the McMichael to perform a special repertoire ahead of their appearance at Choral Canada’s national Podium Conference and Festival in Newfoundland and Labrador. The concert will feature music from such countries as Russia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada—nations linked by the unpredictable geological forces of the 'Ring of Fire.’

National Indigenous Peoples Day: Grass Rocking

In this special celebration, Quentin “Que Rock” Commanda and DJ Creeaisan a.k.a. Matthew Wood – both who have danced for A Tribe Called Red – will lead a performance that showcases hip hop and powwow dances side- by-side. The true fire keepers of hip hop, who dance to heal and restore, the performers and their two special guests, Bigurl Soupy and Wild Foxy, will encourage the audience to participate in this unique experience.

J.E.H. MACDONALD : EN DÉTAIL

Le McMichael célèbre l’art et la science de J.E.H. MacDonald. La restauratrice Alison Douglas partage les résultats d’une analyse scientifique menée par l’Institut canadien de conservation visant à identifier les matériaux et documenter les techniques propres aux œuvres de MacDonald. Réunissant des photographies microscopiques, l’exposition explore la démarche de l’artiste, notamment sa prédilection pour les études de petites dimensions.

Join author Catherine Wilson in a reading from her newest children's book that offers a lyrical insight into the life of Tom Thomson as told from the perspective of his dog Eulalie. Focusing on the artist's last days in Algonquin Park, this book provides a wonderful introduction to one of the most fascinating and mysterious Canadian artists. A family tour of Tom Thomson's sketches and a drop-in art workshop, where illustrator Ruth MacLean will be present, complement this special afternoon.
